You should NOT have to lock it for it to cut straight. Did you purchase it from a SU! Demonstrator? If so, I'd reach out to her/him and ask them about a replacement trimmer. If you don't get any response, reach out to me and I'll help you. :-) Thank you! Unfortunately I bought it off of Etsy. So I know I'm out of luck. That'll teach me. Ugh!! That does stink! Only thing I can think of is if person on Etsy happens to be a Demo, she may still be able to get you a replacement. The trimmer is awesome and I hate that you can't use yours.

Digging up an old thread! I am in the need of a new 12" trimmer and found this thread. For those of you talking about the Fiskars ProCision trimmer is this the one you're talking about? I would rarely be taking my trimmer anywhere so it wouldn't have to necessarily be portable. I have 2 old original 12" Fiskars trimmers and a green one (maybe EK Success or something. Not a fan of it!). I also have a mini guillotine trimmer from CM that I love for smaller cuts. Anyone have any other suggestions?

I think something like this would be nice but the reviews are really mixed.

nicolep yes that's the one I use. I love it. You can buy it with a 40% coupon at Michaels, making it around $48. ETA I'm not a fan of the guillotine style trimmers. I've never had good luck with them. Maybe I don't hold the paper right enough. But my cuts come out wonky.

I know what you mean GiantsFan. I do LOVE my small CM guillotine trimmer but at work we have a full size guillotine trimmer and I can NEVER get it to cut straight for me, lol. Everyone laughs at me but I am a disaster when it comes to cutting samples with it! My Michael's is a ways away but I'm a good bargain shopper so I'm going to google it to death and see what I can find.

I have a Cutterpiller which is the one I use the most and really love. I also have an older Fiskars rotary trimmer that I've hung onto for when I need something easy to take with me. That one has started to cut a little wonky but I'm familiar with how it's wonky so I can adjust my cut accordingly.
I know a lot of people like guillotine trimmers but I find them very awkward to use.

I recently bought a 12 inch Tonic guillotine cutter, and have actually taken it with me to a crop at the SB store because I like it that much. (I already had a small Tonic guillotine cutter for photos, so I was used to using the guillotine lever and making sure to hold the paper really firmly.)
I only ever had the old purple Fiskars trimmer and it always cut crooked right at the end of the cut, so I could never bring myself to buy another one of that style trimmer.

I have had so many trimmers and I just now think I have the one I love. Another vote for the Fiskars Procision! I just got this for an amazing deal online. In Australia this trimmer usually costs between $140-$200! I got it for $89 with free shipping! Sorry just very excited. I had a CArl for a longtime but it had stopped cutting straight (again!), I hated buying replacement parts for it and I didn't like that it doesn't have a 12x12 space to measure the paper.
I haven't had the Procision long, but it cuts dead straight and seems a good quality item. Fiskars does have good CS as well if I haev any issues. I am totally satisfied with this purchase.

I have a blade but no trimmer. Where did the trimmer go? I don't want to go find the Genesis downstairs. I want just a cheap old trimmer. I had another one but it went to Vancouver with DS. He likes them for doing reports for school.

That's a great price impearia. I'm still using a Tonic Studios trimmer but I think its days are numbered. I think the Procision is the one I'll go for next.

I'm also a fan of the Tonic guillotine trimmer. I've had mine since 2006 and it is still going strong. What I love is that it is self sharpening and I always get straight cuts. Two tips to achieve the self sharpening and the straight cuts: 1) make sure that you tighten the bolt that holds the arm/blade so it's nice and tight and 2) apply pressure to the arm so that it cuts as close as possible to the base, thus giving you a really clean straight cut. This works for me every time. I love this trimmer so much that I picked up another one when they relaunched a year or two ago.
With this being said the problem with the guillotine style trimmer is that you can't make a cut in the middle if the page when needed. I've recently ordered a SU! trimmer since I've heard good reviews. I'm hoping this one will work for me.

I have also heard good things about the SU trimmer; that was my other choice, and I may still get one... someday.

Thanks for the heads up, I've been wanting to buy the Procision but couldn't bring myself to spend that much,I'd been waiting for Spotlight to send me one of those $40 off $100 vouchers for a while now. I placed my order just now.
