She'll be FINE. Remember airports are designed for passengers who speak little to no English. Seriously, as long as she RELAXES, it's pretty darn hard to get lost in an airport. There are also all these nifty people who's job it is to help you find your way. Speaking from someone who's very first flight EVER was when I was 16 and flying from SFO to Ithaca, NY alone with stops in Chicago and Boston. My return flight was delayed for 6 hours in Chicago - all in the days before cell phones. She's 16 - it's time to start teaching her that she can figure it out. That's she's more than capable of reading signs and checking the monitors for gate assignments - and if she's really confused asking an attendant for help.

My 13 YO niece just flew to visit us for the first time by herself. Her Dad did not pay the unaccompanied minor fee on the way here, and she had to change over in Chicago. When we were talking about her trip home, she asked if she had to change planes again, and when I told her she did, she looked like she was going to cry, so we paid the $161 fee to have her registered as an unaccompanied minor. When I told her dad, he said he didn't do that because he wanted to "toughen her up" a bit, and I said she'd had enough "toughening up" on the way out, she deserved to feel comfortable and safe on the way home. There was NO WAY I was going to send someone else's child on a plane without a little extra insurance.

My boys have flown some short regional flights on their own, but took their first international trip this summer. They are coming home on Friday. The number one piece of advice I gave them is relax, breathe and read the signs. Check the departures board to make sure there have been no changes and then read the directional signs. When in doubt, ask.

I also was wondering if everything went smoothly.
