I'm in need of a photo editing program too. Both for free, if possible.
I have a new laptop with Windows 10, and there are a bunch of free programs for me to choose from, but I have no idea where to start. I just want to do basic edits like cropping and brightening, and the free PS Express will do that for me, but I need a few more edits than they offer. I have teens so I'll need to zap some zits for them. And I would prefer that my cropping tool would have presets for standard sized (4x6, 5x7, etc) but I can live without that. But you get the idea, I'm still talking just basic stuff.
Then I want to work up a digital layout. Somehow. (I know I have to get files with background "papers" and stuff too.)
Is there a single program to do all of this? If not, what do you suggest for me? I'm not so tech savvy. And I don't need to store files there. Years ago, I used MS photo editor 9 and I loved it. I was so sad when that computer died because I knew I'd never be able to replace that program.
Is there any hope for me? I'm worried I'll have to spill out for a real PS program, and that looks pricey and hard to learn.
And what do you all do for the digi scrapbooking part?
Thanks!

I've gone the Creative Memories route which is now using Artisan software. In fact I just got back from a weekend retreat learning the software with an instructor from www.pixels2pages.com. I just don't have the knowledge to do the whole Photoshop thingy on my own so I've stuck with someone familiar to teach me.

How great that you could get away for the whole weekend!
I'll check out the link. Thank you! Is the Artisan software free?
I didn't know Creative Memories was doing digital.
(I've been living under a rock for some time now, actually.)

It's not free but you can find Photoshop Elements on sale for s great deal (Costco & Amazon).
I took classes from Jessica Sprague & think she does an amazing job teaching digital scrapbooking. She has some free photoshop videos that help with the basics.

When I bought my laptop it came with Photoshop Elements. I took Jessica Spragues classes (beginning through bootcamp) and she is a wonderful instructor. And with her classes you get lots of free digi stuff.
I received this in an email from JessicaSprague dot com End of February Flash Sale
February is coming to an end. And with that, comes (hopefully) warmer weather and more photos. Spring break is right around the corner. The sunshine and the outdoor parties and events make for great photo opportunities! Take your photos and turn them into some amazing gifts, scrapbooks and more. From scrapbooking to photo editing to poster design and more, there's so much to do and learn with all of my classes. Even a kids class! Use coupon code EndOfFeb to save 10% on any class! Coupon code is valid once per class and will expire March 5, 2016.

I have Photoshop Elements and love it - it's not free but you can download a free trial and see if it's something that you're interested in learning. I will warn you though, its not an easy program to learn. Took me a long time to get to where I am today, but I use it for digi scrapping as well as photo editing and I often us it to make and edit digital supplies to use with my Cameo.

It's good to be aware of my limitations. When you say "a long time," what does that mean. And did you use a tutorial or take a class?

No, I didn't take a class - I probably should have but I don't think that there were many classes available at the time. I read every tutorial I could find, watched podcasts and asked many questions on the digi scrapping board at the old 2Peas site. Honestly I think it took me a good year to be really comfortable with the program, but if I were starting out now with it, I would definitely look into a class - and I'd definitely start with Jessica Sprague. She used to offer short videos on how to do things and I found them to be really helpful. I think you'd learn a lot from taking a starter class with her. At the end of the day, even if you don't use PSE for digi scrapping, it's an amazing program for photo editing. I'd seriously be lost without it!

msliz, I love the Designer Digitals website -- as well as Jessica Sprague -- for learning anything digital. Photoshop Elements is pretty easy to use, and any tutorials I've done from DD and JS have had directions for PSE and Photoshop.

I'll agree about Photoshop elements. Does everything you need, and it's very easy to find video online for anything you want to do. I have used regular Photoshop for my job, so it was easy for me to pick up, but occasionally I'll want to do something new and I've never had a problem finding a how to video on youtube.
I have a friend that strated it with no experienc, I gave her a quick 10 minute startup demo and she has had no problems learning it. If you give yourself a few days of trying it out an watching videos, you'll see it's easy to pick up.

I also like PS Elements. I bought the latest version at Costco several months ago for around $40. Even if all you end up using it for is photo editing it will be worth the expense. I took an online class with digitalscrapper.com that included a bunch of easy fix edits that was pretty good. They have a bunch of free tutorials and other paid classes too. Digital Scrapper

Just wanted to say thanks to all of you. I have a Costco membership, so I'm going to look for Elements there.
Thanks Peas!
