We're looking at another house, and this one has a big clock (black metal rods) hanging over the family room sofa. It's the only obvious place for a sofa, so I'd put mine there also, if we bought the house.
I don't want an arrangement of smaller objects for that wall. Just one object. But, I don't have a clock. I could hang a canvas. Maybe a barn star? But what are my other options? Any ideas?

Big picture I bought at HomeGoods. I'm one of those tacky people who tries to match the "artwork" to the couch.

If you like the homeowner's clock, ask if you could buy it. Chances are they bought it for that particular spot and might not have a place for it in their new house.
HomeGoods is a great place to find large items to hang on walls - metal sculpture, framed art, clocks.

I've had a quilt, a section of picket fence, and a narrow picture shelf with a series of different size pictures over my couch in different houses. As another poster said, if you like the clock, maybe ask for it to be included. You can also do a search on Houzz for ideas. I like Houzz better than Pinerest for that type of thing because you get more specific results.

My daughter painted a large canvas that we hung over the couch. I was in Hobby Lobby on Saturday and they had a lot of large items that would look good-do you have one nearby?

Depending on window placement in the room, I'm a big fan of mirrors to make a room feel larger. I actually have a large road sign over our couch right now. It was a compromise to incorporate some of DH's "decor" in the house, but I have to say it looks pretty cool with the rest of our decor, kind of an industrial/masculine feel. I'm intending on adding some other items though, I just haven't found the right things yet.

I would go for a large piece of framed art. I know, kind of predictable. If I could afford it, it would be original artwork. If not, a reproduction of an antique travel poster. I actually saw one that I didn't hate at Bed/Bath and Beyond not too long ago. It was an enlargement of an antique postcard. very cute.
What style is your home/living room going to be?
In my living room, one couch is under a window, the other isn't against a wall. BUT the TV has a large picture hanging over it. It's a framed Pegge Hopper print that we got at her studio in Honolulu. Not original but signed.

My sister has some stop-light lenses in her etsy shop: I don't know how you'd hang them but they would look cute to the left of the sign. Here: Stop-light lenses

We have 2 windows behind our couch in the current house. In the Apt we just left I had family pictures there.

Our coffee table is a gear with a glass top. I think I want to avoid anything else "traffic" related on the wall, but I'm not sure quite what to put up. I'm just waiting until something grabs me and HAS to be in my house.

I have a favorite verse actually painted on the wall. We used to have a decorative piece of ironwork, but we had several tremors in the area and I got worried it would fall on someone sitting on the couch.

Since I collect clocks, that would be my first go to item to hang there.

We have a two-story living room, so a very tall wall over our couch. We have a 4.5 foot by 4 foot piece of stained glass in a wood frame/cabinet, with lights behind the glass.

I have a large monogram behind ours. You can choose various fonts depending on your decor.

A large mirror or painting. If I couldn't find something big enough, I would flank it with sconces.

We have a large framed B&W concert photo (Pearl Jam). It's actually really cool looking, IMO.

Or how about an engineer print? You can get them done at Staples for a few dollars and other office supply stores. It says they aren't meant for photographs, but as long as you know that the resolution isn't going to be great, I'd give it a try anyway. Here's a link to how one of my favorite bloggers and how she did it: Engineer print at Housetweaking.com

What style is your home/living room going to be? Almost everything we have is traditional, with a few exceptions that are more "transitional." The road sign wouldn't work for us, but it's a great idea! I wonder if the owner would sell the clock? I'm just dreaming anyway. They rejected our offer but indicated they'd revisit it in a few weeks if they don't have any other bites and we haven't found anything else. Thanks everyone for all the ideas!

Thanks everyone for all the ideas! It is definitely worth asking if you go back to re-bid. The buyer of my condo made the offer contingent on me selling her a bunch of my furniture. We did go back and forth over a couple of items I really hated to part with, but ultimately I sold her 95% of what she was asking for.

Here's a link to how one of my favorite bloggers and how she did it: Engineer print at Housetweaking.com I've done this too! It worked well on a long wall in a hallway. If I'd had the patience to mount them myself, it would have been really cheap, but I was in a hurry and had them drymounted at Hobby Lobby (in case someone doesn't want to do it themselves). If it had been just one print, it would have been pretty reasonable to have done at HL once you considered buying the foam, spray glue, etc, but of course I had four...

I did a 'collage' of family face closeups. I Mod Podged them onto 12x12 canvases and sort of attached them to one another.

My sofa faces two windows so I have a mirror which reflects the light back into the room. Plus it's great if the doorbell rings as I can give a quick look to see whether or not I'm even presentable enough to answer the door.

To the OP, I just have a large painting in a really nice frame over our couch, we are boring...LOL We had a photobooth at our wedding, that's where we got them. Then I just photoshopped the ones I wanted together and added a fade on the edges. You could easily do this with photos of your family though if you set up a little "at home" photobooth. I don't know how dry mounting works, but the way you see it suggested to mount these is to spray with spray glue and mount on large foam insulation. Lots of tutorials out there if you google "engineer print mount."
