I once found an old schoolhouse topographical map in an antiques store and didn't buy it. I am still kicking myself - it would look perfect over our sofa in our current home. I am on the lookout for another one.

I have a large framed mirror behind our couch.
I'm a mean wife, my husband had a handful of road signs from college and they stay in the garage.

I bought 3 16 x20 collage frames with various sized openings. Then I made mini scrapbook pages for each opening. One frame for each kid and one for my husband and I. I made them many years ago and now can't decide if I should update them now that they are older.

Any place that does framing can drymount something for you. It's basically just gluing it to a piece of foam core so that it can be hung without having to frame the photo. I was thinking of doing one of the engineer prints of a pic of my three kiddos that I love but I wanted something really large scale, like 3 feet x4 feet, so a frame was going to be kind of pricey. Will have to think about drymounting it now..much cheaper and not nearly as heavy, so much easier to hang!

A big piece of art, or a metal scroll thing, or a clock. Homegoods is a great place to look for big art pieces.
I am a fan of a gallery wall but, you would have to be careful for it not to look junky. (IMO)

When Dh retires from the military and we settle down in a house long term I want to frame a copy of the blueprints. That would probably be big enough to go over a sofa.
We have a large wall in our dinning room. We made a 3' x 6' canvas that I painted a silhouette map of the world on. Fills the space nicely.

I have this over my couch. It's from Ikea and it's 55 x 39 1/4 inches. It fits perfectly between 2 windows.

if you like the clock, buy it ir buy one similar.
right now, our couches are not against the wall (a few feet away). on the wall behind one are windows. on the other wall i have a 40x40 canvas print (looks like oil painting).
i like a photo wall above a couch (not necessarily family photos), large artwork, etc.
i like the sign in AN's picture, but that would not work for everyone.

I always love gallery walls at other people's homes but I can never seem to get them right so I did a sort of gallery like the one in this link from the houzz website to fill a big wall space. I am really happy with the way it turned out. It fills the space nicely but doesn't look cluttered. <img style="max-width:100%;" alt="" src=" ">
