I use the big 15 lb bags of rice, so I do wash it thoroughly before putting it in the ricemaker.

I never have, maybe I will try it.
I think I may have read somewhere before that rice has arsenic in it from the soil it was grown in. (sorry if this has already been mentioned, I haven't read all the posts)

No but I know that is done in some Asian cultures, it supposedly gets rid of some of the starch. I might just get that gadget to rince my quinoa with it.

Always. It gets a lot of the starch out and I don't like sticky mushy rice. The only time I don't rinse is when I brown it in oil before adding the water/broth. I do that for Mexican rice.

Uncle Ben's or long grain - no rinse. Calrose - sometimes. I don't really notice a difference...it's always sticky.
For those that rinse it after it's been cooked, doesn't it end up watery since I think it would be hard to get all the water back out of the rice? What type are you rinsing after cooking?

Yes I rinse my rice. My mom is from Taiwan and that's what you do! FYI traditional "sticky rice" is made from short grain rice. The length of the grain give different results. ca angel yup! the stickiness depends on the kind of rice and not whether you rinse or not. I always rinse the rice too.

I never knew I was supposed to until I saw a rice rinser on Amazon a few years ago. However, I still don't and my rice turns out just fine. Fluffy when I want or sticky when I want. We're still here so I guess it's okay.

I use Nishiki rice and was taught by my Japanese mom to rinse it. I always have so am not sure if it would turn out differently in the rice cooker if I didn't.

The reason you are supposed to rinse rice is to try to reduce some of the arsenic. Rinsing it thoroughly removes about 25% of the residual arsenic. Worrisome level of arsenic in rice

I grew up eating Basmati rice (and sometimes Jasmine rice). We always rinse it several times so it doesn't get sticky. We love rice in this house. But too bad it has so many carbs!

We love rice and I am always looking to improve. Always! I buy the large 20-30 pound bags of Jasmine or Basmati rice that come from Asia. I always rinse it until the water is almost clean. It helps the rice be less sticky and it also cuts down on the arsenic you may ingest with the rice.

The directions for my rice cooker say to rinse (to get some starch off for better cooking). I did it once without rinsing first and I really did notice a difference and now I always rinse it.

I've only seen it on the package of the Jasmine rice that I buy. The package says to rinse before cooking. So I do. Sometimes. When I am not lazy. Thing is, I'm always lazy.

American milled varieties do not need to be rinsed. They are enriched with extra vitamins and minerals in a coating after processing and cleaning-rinsing removes this. Imported rice has different standards-don't know, would check the packaging for recommendation. I generally don't rinsed and never have-grew up in Louisiana and we didn't there.

Yes, I rinse until the water is clear. A friend of mine who is Korean said to always rinse to get the excess starch off and then it will not be sticky. I also rinse quinoa. Yes for the reason explained above. i use an electric rice cooker and the instructions say to rinse until the water runs clear.

I didn't until we had visitors from China who rinsed before cooking. I don't cook rice often, but now when I do I may remember to rinse it first.
