to sea? I'd always envisioned a black poodle in a boat, but apparently it was an Irish Setter who was swimming, and just swam out too far? The song is from 1976, for you youngsters. It was Beach Boy's Brian Wilson's dog, and it actually happened according to this source.

Yes. I was in second or third grade when that came out. The artist was Henry Gross. It's on one of my K-Tel record albums.

I remember it! There was a trend in the 1970s for those sad songs that told a story. Let's think of some others: The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia Wildfire Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald I was a young teen in the 1970s and loved these type of songs. sharlag how do you keep coming up with these diverse thread topics? I'd love to sit and have a cup of coffee and a chat with you one day.

Teen Angel
I have to look up Shannon. I vaguely remember being sad about a dog floating away in a song when I was little.

That song always made me so sad. Elton John's "Daniel" is another one that makes me sad.

It was Beach Boy's Brian Wilson's dog, and it actually happened according to this source. Shannon was a Samoyed and owned by Brian Wilson's brother Carl. He (the dog) was run over by a car and the song was apparently written after that. Brian Wilson's most known dogs were Banana and Louie, neither of them were lost at sea. Sorry, I went through a phase of knowing too many Beach Boy facts. I still love their music and am in a few Beach Boy Facebook groups. I accept I am an anorak.

The Pina Colada song. That guy and his "laideh" deserved each other, IMO. (There were so many "laidehs" in 60s and 70s songs. Where did they all go?)

Had to look up this song and listen to it since my name is Shannon. We found it hilarious. I tried to get my husband to download it and make it my ringtone in his phone. He didn't go for it.

Run Joey Run. I think was the name of the song I remember as being sad and maybe corny from my childhood.

I always pictured an Irish Setter, but I think that breed was very popular then, and so was that name.
