I love that song but didn't know it was about a dog! Me either! I thought it was about a girl. Dogs are never mentioned. At least it was made clear that Wildfire was a pony!

I remember it well and it still makes me cry when I hear it. In fact, I have to turn it off lol

I grew up in the 70's and each week my mum bought 2 new singles. We had the coolest record collection in the street and my friends would all come over and we would hold "dance parties" in our living room! My favourites - Run Joey Run, Seasons in the Sun, Rocky, Leader of the Pack, Wildfire
My all time favourite sad song- Honey by Bobby Goldsboro. I can still remember the cover! And who could forget these memorable lyrics??
See the tree, how big it's grown But friend it hasn't been too long It wasn't big I laughed at her and she got mad The first day that she planted it, was just a twig Then the first snow came And she ran out to brush the snow away So it wouldn't die Came runnin' in all excited Slipped and almost hurt herself And I laughed till I cried She was always young at heart Kinda dumb and kinda smart and I loved her so And I surprised her with a puppy Kept me up all Christmas Eve two years ago And it would sure embarrass her When I came in from workin' late 'Cause I would know That she'd been sittin' there and cryin' Over some sad and silly late, late show
And honey, I miss you And I'm bein' good And I'd love to be with you If only I could
She wrecked the car and she was sad And so afraid that I'd be mad But what the heck Though I pretended hard to be Guess you could say she saw through me And hugged my neck I came home unexpectedly And caught her cryin' needlessly In the middle of the day And it was in the early Spring When flowers bloom and robins sing She went away
And honey, I miss you And I'm bein' good And I'd love to be with you If only I could
One day while I was not at home While she was there and all alone The angels came Now all I have is memories of Honey And I wake up nights and call her name Now my life's an empty stage Where Honey lived and Honey played And love grew up And a small cloud passes overhead And cries down on the flower bed That Honey loved
And see the tree how big it's grown But friend it hasn't been too long It wasn't big And I laughed at her and she got mad The first day that she planted it, was just a twig

-Ode to Billie Joe ("The night Billie Joe McAllister jumped off the Tallahassee Bridge.)
-Harper Valley PTA ("Well, this is just a little Peyton Place, and you're all Harper Valley hypocrites.")
-Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves ("And every night all the men would come around, and lay their money down.")
-Copacabana ("Music and passion were always the fashion.")
And the only Beatles songs I dislike...and boy, do I dislike them: "Eleanor Rigby" and "She's Leaving Home."

These songs bring back the memories. I remember most all of them.
Song that came to mind - Neil Young's "Heart of Gold."
Someone mentioned "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald." I loved that song, too. It was sung and written by Gordon Lightfoot; he was one of my favorites back in the day.

How did I never know Shannon was a dog???!! I thought it was a girl. My world just rocked a little! Add "The Night Chicago Died" and "Sunshine on my Shoulders" to this list. I loved both of those.

There was a rash of girls named Shannon around that same time frame when that song got popular. I remember I hated that song, it was creepy, and I never even knew it was about a dog! LOL

Add me to the list of people who love the song (and will soon be putting it on her iPod) and NEVER knew it was about a dog.
