Regular vinyl ... for words on paper not designs on clothing. Any suggestions as to product (I hear that the Silhouette vinyl isn't any good - I've heard that the variety pack on Amazon isn't very good) and where to purchase?

I've had good luck with the Silhoutte and the Cricut vinyl in my Silhoutte, actually. I don't use a ton so the colors I got originally have served me well and lasted.
There is another vinyl people like bc you can get it for cheap, but the name escapes me. Hopefully someone knows what I'm talking about!

Oracal 631 is the indoor vinyl that most people use and like. It's the one that most of the companies cut down from large rolls and repackage with their own label. Because it has a matte finish the problem that arises with it is it's a little harder to find transfer tape that works great with it. Either the tape doesn't like to stick to the surface of the vinyl well enough to pull it off the backing, or you get one that's too sticky and you can't get the transfer off of the tape and onto the surface. The clear R Tape is the best I've found but it's expensive.
Vinyl is really easy to cut and you can do some very fun things with it so it's worth taking the time to learn how to do it.

I've used lots of different vinyl with my Silhouette. Do not get the Hobby Lobby brand vinyl. It's the worst. Cricut Brand was a little better if you don't want to order online and prefer to go into a craft store to purchase some. I now order all of my vinyl from ExpressionsVinyl.com. They have good prices and ship fast. And all of their vinyl cuts & weeds like butter!

I like using Oracal vinyls. They cut great. 631 has a matte finish and looks fantastic on paper. It is just a little easier to work with, since the adhesive isn't quite as sticky as the 651.
631 is what you use for "wall words" - it is removable, and has a matte finish.
651 is more permanent. It has a glossy finish and stronger adhesive.
I buy mostly from online suppliers. The Vinyl Spectrum or Expressions Vinyl are both great places to buy from.
Don't forget the transfer tape. I like clear transfer tape. For transferring to paper, I use a piece of transfer tape that has been used a few times, so it isn't as tacky.

I've never had any problems with they the Cricut or Silhouette brand vinyl... and transfer tape - I've used a low tack shelf paper that works like a charm and it's not nearly as pricy as "transfer tape".

I don't even bother with store brands. I prefer Oracal brand vinyl, but it is mostly sold online. Here is a better explanation of the different brands/grades of vinyl:

I've had good luck with the Silhouette brand vinyl. Even on mugs that go in the dishwasher! So I think for scrapbook pages you'll be just fine with Cricut or Silhouette brand.
You can reuse the transfer tape. I still have a roll of the original clear transfer tape that Silhouette sold. It's so much easier to use than the Cricut kind that is like masking tape.

Definitely do not use Silhouette brand vinyl. Get Oracle 651 or 631 depending on project. Cuts like butter.

Another who buys from ExpressionsVinyl.com. Transfer tape you can get at most places and it definitely helps a lot.
