We have 2 yo shih tzu and we recently added a puppy, he's almost 5 months old. The issue is food and it's driving me crazy!
2 yo has had some allergies issues which were a huge problem last year. I'm suspecting it may have been a chicken allergy. We have her on Precise as it had good ratings for allergies and we were trying to rule out/keep her consistent.
So then we get the monster baby...he was actually on an adult food grain free food. Vet recommended puppy, but then sort of backed down to it (I didn't question him, he just sort of said, well if he's tolerating it well then I might not mess with it.) I read up a little and was concerned about his bone/muscle growth if he didn't get puppy so I did the mix and switch.
Now they are just driving me crazy....he almost always eats her food first. She of course eats his food every chance she gets. I keep them both away from chicken so it doesn't particularly matter that they are eating each others food, but it's annoying.
Anyone with both an adult dog and puppy? How concerned were you with keeping them in their own food? Did you keep the puppy on puppy food?

I haven't had that experience but if it were me, I'd put them both on the same adult food and maybe give the puppy vitamins.

The 2 year old dog doesn't need the extra calories found in puppy food; you should keep the 2 year old from eating the puppy food.
When a puppy has reached 90% of their expected adult weight, you should switch them from puppy food to adult food. Small breed; 9-12 months. Large breeds; 12-18 months.

If your vet thinks the puppy is fine on the adult food and you trust them than I think you should follow their advice. If it were my puppy I think I would prefer they be on the puppy food for the calories, fat, vits, etc. But like I said you should probably follow your vets recommendations.

Why can't you just feed them at the same time in a separate spot or separate sides of the kitchen or where ever and then pick up the food? I know, the older one probably gets to free feed and eat whenever, but they are dogs and mine adjusted just fine to that schedule. My cats not so much....
Now I'm trying to convince my cats to just eat twice a day (we got a new kitten - same problem - but with kitten chow, and my one fatty doesn't need the extra kitten chow calories), but they are driving me crazy. So it hasn't been working out.
But it was fine when I had my mil's dogs for 2 weeks and just fed them 2x a day along with our dog. Her dogs would eat anything and everything, and my picky 5lb ball of fluffy dog would not. But he got the idea pretty quick and didn't starve.

We added a puppy late last summer and we found the puppy eating the adult food and adult eating the puppy food. We just gave up and both have been eating puppy food with the ok from our vet. Our puppy is almost a year now so we will be slowly bringing in adult food and mixing until both are on adult food.
you can try feeding at different times but this was just easier for us. Good luck!

One of the Sams would eat anything and everything, so we fed the pup in her crate. She is now two and we still feed her in her crate and don't have any problems keeping them out of each other's food. If you don't want to crate train you can try putting up a babygate and feed the puppy on the other side from the other dogs.

I have an adult dog on a prescription diet and recently adopted a 1-year old. I feed the adult her prescription food first (I actually mainly hand feed her slowly because eating too fast causes her problems) and then feed the "puppy" while I sit there and monitor that the adult doesn't try to eat her food.
While it does take time to feed and monitor everyone at least I know everyone is getting the right food.
I was also rather astonished the first night we had the new one - she figured out right away that Kayley's feeding time wasn't about her and didn't try to nose in on it.
