I'm a nervous wreck!! Had my first mammogram Thursday. Dr's office called today and said they want me to have and diagnostic on the right side. I'm panicking!! Only thing keeping me a little calm is I had an ultrasound on that side about 2 years ago due to feeling something and they said it was a fluid filled cyst and not to worry. But worry I am  |

I can totally relate. I was called back last year after my mammogram for some extra views but it turned out to be nothing - just some calcification that they couldn't see clearly. Try not to worry - I'm sure they're just being cautious. Sending calming thoughts your way  |

Happened to me too, then US, then biopsy (benign). I wasn't worried though, I've had a cyst before and that's what this was. Being called back after a first mammogram is very common. Don't worry until you have something to worry about! (I know, easier said than done!)

((hugs)) and good thoughts. I had a lump removed at 18 & many mammograms over the last 20 years. Unless I have a diagnostic & ultrasound for the 1st I've always had a call back. Nothing has ever been an issue. I've been told some of us just have dense, hard to see breast tissue. I hope that's your case!

Soooooooo common. The first time I was called back, I was a nervous wreck. The second time, concerned but calmer. Now I'm surprised if I don't get called back. I've had more followup procedures done always nothing. They just have to be VERY sure so even the slightest thing will trigger a callback. One time, they couldn't even find anything -- must have been a shadow or the way the breast had been compressed or something that they couldn't explain. Hang tight!

Because you've had a fluid-filled cyst before, it would be my highly-uneducated-though-personally-experienced guess that it may be another one of those. Traditional mammography cannot differentiate those from other types of cysts/masses and requires further testing. I have had many (probably 8-10) of those cysts over the last 10 years.
So sorry you're having to wait and agonize.

I was also sent back but to a specialized facility.
Turned out to just be dense tissue.
Hopi g for the best for you and a little piece of advice.
I have really good insurance but they still didn't pay for my second mammogram.
Grrr. It was 500.00.
So maybe you can spend some time and release the tension by checking with your insurance to see what the deal is.

I had to go back for ultrasound. It was due to nodules. The radiologist read my scans immediately and came in to reassure me that all was well and I had nothing to worry about and could go home.
I was a mess waiting for my ultrasound as I had lost two friends last year to breast cancer.

(((Hugs))) and prayers that the waiting time will go quickly for you and that it won't be anything serious.
I had to have an ultrasound after my first mammogram b/c I had a lump that they couldn't see properly with the mammogam. Fortunately the dr and technician looked at it right away so I didn't have to wait too long for the verdict (just a sebaceous cyst).

I have to go in every 6 months for ultrasounds.
I use to think the worst but after a few years, I am used to it.
Take a deep breathe, don't Google & know that majority of evals are negative.

I have gone through the same thing. I did the whole freak out thing and posted here, to be reassured by everyone that it was much more common than I realized. Mine turned out to be just fine.

I'm right there with you, sweetie!
I'm waiting between needle biopsy and surgical consult for a lumpectomy. I have a 1.8cm intraductal papilloma w/out atypia. Not cancer but still needs to come out. They also listed sclerosing adenosis, columnar cell change, apocrine metaplasia, duct ectasia & microcalcs. I believe some of that is standard breast tissue but don't quote me on that. melissa ?
Here is my experience, in case it helps to sort of know what to expect.
I noticed mine in the shower 2 weeks ago Wed evening, was just soaping along as usual and then  . It felt like a BB (I named her Beebs), about pea-sized. Very defined, round, hard (way smaller than 1.8cm so that has me somewhat confused). I texted one of our church elders, who also happens to be the director of nursing at our hospital, apologized for crossing the personal/professional line, and told her what I'd found. She immediately called me, asked a number of questions, told me where she goes for her mammograms, said to call the clinic first thing in the morning to make an apt for mammo referral. About 10 min later she texted and said I had an apt at 11 (gotta love small towns lol).
Went to local dr Thurs am, nurse came in and gave me mammo times to choose from, she had the imaging place on the phone and they were working me in. She had it scheduled for early the next morning before the Dr even met Beebs. Ha. Ended up having an u/s at our local hospital that afternoon just for peace of mind. Sonographer also recommended same imaging center.
(came home from u/s, rested for an hour, got text from my sister about Hesston shooting, forgot all about Beebs)
Friday am I went to the city & had diagnostic mammo, u/s, went to lunch, then had needle biopsy. The biopsy was the easiest part of the day, DON'T be scared of having one. Just a couple of sticks for the numbing meds, and then I felt nothing of the biopsy. They gave me an ice pack and a too-small sports bra, took another mammo for their records (he inserted a clip during the biopsy for future reference), and sent me on my way. Once the numbing medicine wore off, the ice pack was my friend. That **** bra, not so much.  It really wasn't bad though. She said it should only be sore for about 24 hrs, but Beebs happens to like to hang out right where I sleep, so she lets me know she's there when I wake up.
They were absolutely wonderfully fabulous, and I was greatly comforted by their care.
I will pray that your experience is the same, and that your results are nothing to worry about.
And oh goodness, I'm so sorry for hogging your thread!!!!  Please don't hesitate to message me if you just need to swap shoulders. The only experience/knowledge I have has been gained in the past couple weeks, so I can't answer any medical questions, but I can pray and give virtual hugs. Let me know what you find out, ok? |

After my first mammogram I was in every 6 months for about 18 months before they let me go the year. Even then I get called back at least 1/2 the time. They say I have dense tissue. Try not to worry, it's not uncommon to be called back for additional images.

I should add that Beebs had changed dramatically since having her 2 days of stardom. Instead of a BB she now feels more like what I would describe as a plugged milk duct. I can still feel a core, which is probably that 1.8cm part, but there's definitely more to her. I also feel a couple of teeny tiny BBs (I'm sure these are cysts, both sonographers said that was very clear). I'm almost wondering if the initial thing I felt was just a normal cyst, but led me to discovering the other. Hmm.

Call back rates are up to 15%, depending on the facility and population. Women with denser breasts are more likely to be called back. The younger you are, the denser the breasts tend to be. No children (no pregnancies to term) also result in denser breasts. For the OP, a history of a cyst on the same side leads to the likely hypothesis that this is once again a cyst. Do not be surprised if they recommend ultrasound as well. When I had my call back, I had many mammograms and an ultrasound all in the same day. What flute4peace describes is another benign breast finding, a papilloma. The pathology terms are all benign descriptive words. Cysts are also very normal breast tissue and nothing to be concerned about. Fibroadenomas are the third very common benign breast findings. Like papillomas, they are also often removed even though they are benign. |

This happened to me for the first time this year, after many, many mammograms. They saw "linear calcification" in my left breast, which I'd never heard of before. At the end of my mammogram, the doctor and the technician came out to tell me and made an appt for a "special view" mammogram the next day. There were a lot of hushed tones, which honestly freaked me out more than anything.
I went back the next day for the second mammogram, which my insurance did not pay for by the way! At the conclusion of the "special view" mammogram, more hushed tones and an appointment made for a biopsy the next day. (Everything was happening so fast!)
I had the biopsy that Friday and had an appointment the following Monday with a different doctor for the results. At this point, I was totally prepared for cancer. The doctor walks in, looking very unkempt and nearly homeless I might add, and thrusts the results into my hand with the word, "Benign!" No beating around the bush. He said patients are usually so stressed out at this point that he feels he has to cut to the chase right out of the gate.
The whole experience cost me $3500 as it was all applied to my annual deductible, but in my opinion it was money well spent. I guess from now on I have to get two mammograms a year.
Here's hoping you have good results! It's very scary!

I just went through 2 weeks of mammogram, call back, more mammogram views, ultrasound, biopsy, mammogram, and finally a benign diagnosis. A most stressful time. I know they err on the side of caution. Hoping for you that it will be nothing.

I haven't read the other comments, but it is not uncommon to get a call back after your first one. They don't have anything to compare to. I had to go back after my 3rd one...turned out to be nothing.
