DH and I were talking about getting rid of Directv.... although we love it and love watching TV, we just need to start cutting back and we are now both on board.. So we have Netflix and a Wii... so that is one alternative.. what else would be good other than the antenna to get local channels? I LOVE my HGTV and not sure if I can get those type shows???

I cannot stand regular tv. We only have basic so we can get the local channels, other than that...if we watch anything, it's Netflix or Bluray/DVD. Couldn't be happier. We find the tv off a good deal of the time. So much more peaceful!

We have Netflix and then Chromecast so we can cast stuff from our computers/phones to the TV. I use Hulu a lot while TV is "in season" - have been using free but Hulu Plus allows you to use the app on your phone/cast it to the TV. I have a 3 month gift card I got for my birthday that I'll use this fall once seasons start back up.

I gave up directv and have Netflix, hulu and an antenna for my local channels. I don't miss my cable bill at all and my netflix and Hulu costs me less than $20.00 a month. The antenna cost me about $40.00. One of the best decisions I've made.

I would love to do that but would really miss Food Network on Saturday and Sunday mornings. We have cut back our cable to expanded basic. We have Amazon Prime and Netflix, but don't watch a lot of it.

I would love to do this but I don't have dh on board yet. We could save a ton of money doing without Direct tv.

We haven't had cable or satellite TV for four years now. We stream Netflix and Hulu primarily wth a computer and larger monitor. I also stream some shows directly from PBS and other network websites.
It works, but I sure do miss cooking shows and other things as well. Like the Olympics!

We will never be able to do this because DH loves sports too much. We tried buying MLB to watch baseball, but they block our home team. What good is that?

We've only had Netflix and the good ol' antenna (and Hulu, but not plus) for the last 5 years. We also have AppleTV so we can stream to our TV anything we can watch on a laptop. IF I had more options, I'd only watch more tv! So I think of it as saving both money and time!

We got rid of DirecTV, and we just have Netflix and Roku. We haven't missed DTV at all, but we don't watch the HGTV shows, so I have no idea if they are available. We do buy TV shows at Costco when there is a series we like, and we have an extensive movie collection. DirecTV had gotten rid of a lot of the shows we liked, and added stuff we didn't care for. We were pretty much watching mostly NCIS and American Pickers. It just didn't make sense to keep paying for DTV for one or two shows.

We got rid of DirectTV about 4 years ago. I did miss Fox News and HGTV for the first couple months. Kids missed their shows too for a while. But now we have Hulu and Netflix and use Roku. Nobody in the house misses cable or satellite TV. It's an adjustment that is well worth the money saved. We also seem to watch more tv as a family now.

I couldn't tell you how long it's been since we've had cable or satellite. Four or five years is my best guess. We have 3 Roku boxes. There are LOTS of free channels out there...enough to entertain my son and I, as well as the grandchildren when they come to visit.

I've been thinking of ditching direct tv too. We have AT&T Uverse for internet would that be enough to do Netflix? We cant get any other internet other than dial up(well or sattelite which is pricey).. We have a Wii and keep saying we are going to do a netfix trial, but then another day and another week passes by and we haven't done it yet. I'm guessing we could pick up Hulu on the Wii as well?
Pardon my ignorance, I truly don't know how all this works..
I've saw that Chromecast thing? would that be something we should look into? and what is a Roku anyway?.. we currently have a DVR and LOVE LOVE LOVE it..but you know how it is, you watch the same stuff and I'm not sure keeping the directv is worth it if there are other ways around it..
However. we are HUGE huge huge Walking Dead fans.. If we ditch the dish will we be able to somehow watch that still? even if its a few days later, I just want to stay somewhat current with it. and yes I know its silly to keep the sattelite and the bill for that one show, this is another reason why I need more info..

I want to ditch Directv too. Half the time the channels we watch don't come in anyway. Our problem is there are shows we like we want to be current on too, Walking Dead for sure and I am ashamed to say I still watch Days of Our Lives and would like to keep watching that (until EJ and Sammy leave at least!). I know with an antanae I could watch nbc, but I am not home when Days is on, and if we lose Directv we lose the DVR aspect. What is Apple TV?

Nice... didn't know there was an app for HGTV.. definitely will have to hook that up.
I'm a lot like gracieplusthree.. I am not sure how all this stuff works.. lol
I'm not sure what all those boxes, like Apple, Roku, Chrome.. do they all stream something different? So they are basically all competing against each other?

I am calling to make a payment Friday and will ask then, but I want to cut WAY down.. I think we pay about $100/month and that is for middle of the road package.. I think even cutting down to the lowest package they have is still over $60 some dollars. I have to see where we are at in our contract as well. I think it is less than a few months, I hope...

I too watch Days of Our Lives, have all my life, I do tend to fast forward through a lot of it some days though.. losing the DVR is what has stopped me from turning off the direct tv, and I know one can buy a Tivo for that, but if you are doing netflix and hulu and an antennea does the Tivo record off of those options?.. see I told you I know nothing.. lol I need to call direct and fuss at them and get my bill lowered, I usually do that once a year but have totally slacked on it and havent done it in probably closer to 2 years now.

We haven't paid for DirecTV since 2005. I miss certain channels like Discovery, the Food Network, the Travel channel, and the design channels like HGTV. The way those channels are bundled to get everything I want to watch I have to get a bigger package. I wish you could pay by the channel in a pick-your-own format type package. Now, we have Netflix and the box that you have to have to get local channels, but we rarely watch regular tv (like once a year maybe).

I've been thinking about possibly cutting back my cable to just basic. I don't think I could pull the plug completely. Do Hulu/Plus/Chromecast/Roku offer the Hallmark channel? I can't live without that on the weekends and Christmas time.

Many of the shows can be viewed on that. and some of the other channels also have apps through which you can watch multiple series from their line up. The majority of our screen time occurs through Netflix and Amazon (Prime), which you might like. I think they compliment each other's offerings. Go ahead and try it without cable - you can always hook it back up.

I cannot ever get rid of some sort of TV as we watch way too many sports in my house.
Have you looked into switching to Dish. New customers always get the best deals and most people I talk to switch every time their contract is up because of the cost difference.

Oh gosh, so we watched TV last night without Directv.. hooked up an antenna (on another TV)... okay this SUCKS. I don't know if I can do it. First it was close to impossible to even get the three local channels working (the antenna was supposed to be a 'good' one).. one was okay the other one very iffy and never even got the third station on. There is no pausing, YIKES and then you don't even know what you are watching if you just turn it on in the middle of something. Then WHY are all the Spanish stations come in loud and clear? 20 of those stations and they work like a charm, but I can't even get a couple of regular stations? ugggg.
I know I should get past all that.. but holy heck. I think I will just downgrade our service to the lowest one possible, unhook the other TVs from it and that should significantly lower the bill. I don't need it in my scrapbook room really or bedroom (we just usually watch the news in there anyways.)...
Edited to add.. maybe by doing this, it will be easier to cut the cord a little bit down the road instead of all at once.

I'm all for it, but it's the whole no live sports that kills it every time. I think DH and DS would fall over and then sulk.
We actually just re-upped for DirecTV (can't do Dish - they were so awful to us that cutsey kangeroo mascot or not, I cannot have them again). And don't get me started on the whole Time Warner "we own the Los Angeles Dodgers, now pay up" fiasco. Seriously hope DirecTV kicks their a$$ in arbitration.
I think it's just one of those stupidly expensive bills that just have crept into normalcy like our cell phone bills have.
