DH's coworker's Maltese just had a litter and asked my husband if we would want one of the pups (after they are weened). I've done research on a bunch of different dog sites, but would love to hear from an actual owner. I'm not ready to jump into a pet message board yet, so I thought I'd start here first. Currently, it's just the 2 of us (DH & I) and we don't have any children right now (we're in the process of trying to adopt). We both work full-time, but I can bring dogs to work and also my office is 3 miles from our house. We currently don't have any other pets. Thanks in advance!

I have had two maltese. My first I used to refer to as my little clown dog. He was so happy go lucky and a mama's boy - such a great dog! My second is a rescue. He was abused and is fear aggressive and unfortunately occasionally bites. He is on Prozac and we've done a lot of behavior modification but he could not live with childre, although he likes them. I couldn't trust him. But he is smart and a good companion.
The breed is very loyal and they usually attach themselves to one person. Also, both of mine had terrible separation anxiety.
This is a small breed dog. If you are going to have a little one in your home maybe a toy breed wouldn't be great timing.

I had a male Maltese, Bailey. He lived to the ripe age of 15. He was such a sweet little guy. I called him my Velcro dog. Everywhere I went, there went Bailey!!! I got him in the cold bitter winter, so potty training him was hard, poor little guy would just stand there and shiver, then I'd bring him in and he would pee!!! I ended up crate training him and installed a doggie door.
I miss the little guy, I live alone but he was always friendly with anyone who came over and would lick you to death before he would snap. I got him as a puppy right from the breeder who was a friend of mine. No back yard breeder!!!!
I say go over there and sit and play with the puppies and see how they feel. I always say you don't find your puppy, they find you!!!!! Good luck and of course we need pix!!!!

I have a rescue Maltese. He was 9 when I adopted him, his owner had gone into nursing home, and he ended up at the shelter. He was a nervous wreck when I got him...he wheezed and shook and hid under my feet for the first few weeks...then he fell in love with my Golden Retriever. He outlived her, and now, he's part of the pack. I have two MUCH larger dogs, and he runs and plays with them like nobody's business. He's fine with my grandchildren, even though he had never been around kids before. They are non-allergenic dogs, and they don't shed. Their coat is more like human hair than fur. They do need regular trips to the groomer as the fur tangles very easily and grows crazy long. He's 14 now, but still acts like a puppy.

I have one that is 9 years old. She has never bitten, but she will growl at anyone who tries to pick her up off my bed! I got her from an AKC breeder as a puppy. She has never been the only dog in my home, but I think if she were, she would be very smart. She barks at me when her bowls are empty or if she needs to go out. She also barks if one of the other dogs pees in the floor, etc! Basically, she is my tattle tale. She's a little toughy as well and hold her own around the larger dogs. Her health has been good, but I am about to take her to have two bad teeth pulled. I think if you get the dog, make sure you take it around children to socialize it.

Thanks everyone! I like that they don't shed as much and are non-allergenic and they are so darn CUTE! We are going to check them out in a couple of weeks.
We were thinking about bringing our friend's 2 year old with us to see how they puppies deal with her (and how she deals with them).

I forgot to mention that the maltese needs to be groomed. I take mine about every 5-6 weeks.

I have a maltese-shihtzu mix, male, 8 years old. He is the best dog I've ever had, and I've had dogs all my life. He is happy, friendly, independent, good with kids, barely sheds, non allergenic, and great with cats. I highly recommend maltese as a great family breed.

Please don't. A Maltese is considered a "fine-boned dog" which means they are not suitable for small children. It's just too easy for a young child to injure a tiny Maltese by dropping him, stepping on him, or holding him too tightly. I have a six year old Maltese. She is my shadow and follows me everywhere I go. She's a great dog, but as I have said, the breed is not suitable for small children.
Have you considered a schnauzer? They do not shed. They are also sturdy and playful.

I read that little kids can be too rough on the poor little doggies, but it's not like we would leave our friend's daughter alone with the dogs. We haven't really checked out other dogs yet because my DH's coworker is going to give one to us for free if we want one of the dogs (we would be responsible for all the shots & such).
I appreciate all the advice and will definitely take it all under consideration. We have until October to decide so any decision we make won't be a hasty one.
Thanks again!

We don't have a purebred Maltese, but we have a nearly 6 year old Maltese/Shih Tzu mix. He is sweet as can be, hypoallergenic, intelligent and playful. He's sturdier than a Maltese, but still a small dog. He does growl at some other dogs and at teenage boys (I have 3 teenage girls so that's not a bad thing) - it's not because he's at all aggressive but because he's afraid of them and growls to show his toughness. Yeah, right. I wouldn't hesitate to get a Maltese.
