I am sure some of you remember that for a while now (a year+) I've been receiving emails for other people -- sent to me by accident. For a while I thought it was just one person but it now appears that I am nowhere as unique and special as I thought I was and there are at least three other women who have almost my same name who have nearly identical email addresses as I do. Anyway, a while ago I started getting emails containing meeting minutes for a pony club (I guessed in the UK based on the verbiage, turns out they are from New Zealand). The first email I ignored, figuring it might have been a typo/mistake. The second email I replied to asking them not to email me again because I was not on their committee. She replied saying she was new and didn't understand who was supposed to receive which emails for which committees. I let it go, figuring she was going to remove me as I asked. The third email I replied to saying "Please remove my email address. I am not part of your organization!". After the fourth email I received a long description of "my" role as Head Coach (!!!) of the pony club and how I agreed to be part of these committees and how I needed to receive communications so I could be kept up to date. I have replied -- again -- saying I am not Head Coach. I am not part of Pony Club. I do not live in New Zealand. I am not who they think I am. I live in Canada. I am just a mom. I do not know any ponies. DH says if they email me again I should resign my position in a fiery storm, citing email overburden as my reason for not being able to continue as Head Coach of Pony Club.

That's bizarre... and you should totally do what your DH suggested.

I have to agree, just resign as Pony Club head coach but I would cite the main reason is you've been asked to be the Horse Club head coach and just can't turn down the opportunity and the challenges that await you. Or perhaps you could suggest converting the Pony Club into a my little Brony Club and send out lots and lots of pictures of your fellow Bronies from around the world. That should get their attention!

You could reply saying that you will have to resign because you know that it will be difficult to meet your commitments to the club if you have to commute from Canada.

I get them all the time too. It's annoying. Sometimes I reply back and let them know they have the wrong address if it's something important, but I've also had a bit of fun with it. When I have let you know you have the wrong email address for the first Engagement Party evite you sent, and you replied back and acknowledged it, and then sent a second invite... Imma reply no and let you sort it out with your friend.

That is really strange. When I got my new cell phone number I kept receiving appointment calls, friend calls, work calls from someone that wasn't me. That I get, but an email. That is really weird. You should definitely do what your husband suggested.

Most of the communications I receive are not from actual people but rather automated replies for stuff like shopping, paying a hospital bill, job application notifications/rejections, Twitter/FB/Pinterest registrations.

Hahaha- all of the above. You should hairflip out of the pony club in the best old pea board fashion, or send them a pro forma invoice for an airticket/ projected expenses, dietary requirements, preferred hotel and so on. Then hairflip when they query it. I am sure there are thousands more bits of Pea deliciousness you could use against them- that'll larn 'em! PS- if you go, we will need pictures

Sometimes it's slightly irritating, but I generally find this whole situation to be more entertaining than anything. Last night DH and I were laughing so hard over my role as Head Coach of Pony Club that we woke up the baby!

I also think you may want to email them and ask what perks are associated with being the Head Coach of Pony Club. Do you get a Pony Club lapel pin? A membership card with special pony discounts? Do your friends and family get free pony rides? It might be something you want to consider before you "resign".

I think you should resign lol.
I have a funny thing with my email too. Years ago when we set up our very first email address with the company I work for my name had already been used so I did the same name with a one behind it. (It was a Juno account way back then) Well as time goes by I realize I am not getting a lot of the emails people say they send. There was one really important one and I sent an email to the address without the one asking if there were getting a lot of email for me? Well I started emailing back and forth with this guy only to find out he is related to my husband lol. I am in the east cost and Al was in the west coast. It was so fun talking with him.

I was going to add something clever, but I can't really top what ChicagoKaren said. I've also received emails meant for someone else. I have a pretty unusual last name and was receiving email for someone with my last name and the first name "Shontel." There were pictures from her son's vacation in Greece. Party invitations. Even job interview follow-up emails. This went on for at least three years! She ended up getting a new email address entirely because of it. I'm not sure what the issue was, but it involved Gmail. We chatted a couple times about it and I haven't received anything for Shontel in a couple years now.

Before you resign you need to institute all kinds of crazy rules and regulations, get yourself a fat raise and ponies for all your girls with a lifetime supply of feed/supplies. Head Coaches have perks!!
You should also demote the head communications screw up to pony poop picker upper since she's doing a crap job at commmunicating effectively anyway.

These updates are amusing, but I'm wondering why you don't just set up a new email? Because everything I do is associated with this email, I've had it for at least 8 years now, and I'm not going to change everything in my life that is associated with email because I get some incorrect mail. That would be like asking why someone doesn't move because they get mail for someone else.

Speaking of magical ponies, I'm wondering if you can get unicorns into the pony club. That would be awesome!

moving email isn't really much like moving a house. I've had my email for over 10 years. In a few weeks I have to switch everything over. major PITA but I'm pretty sure I'll ditch a lot of spam in the process.

I have never heard of a Pony Club, and could only think of a strip club in Atlanta but that turns out to be called "The Pink Pony." So I had to first google what a real Pony Club actually does. I totally like the ideas that have been posted. Please let us know what happens!
