I had DS watering them, and I think he just stood there a minute, instead of 5 minutes to really soak them.
Well, before I knew it, all of my petunias had croaked!
Now I have this sad, wheelbarrow full of death.
Would you start over, half way through the summer annual season? In Kansas, they'll bloom well into September.

how 'dead' are they?
try watering them again - if there is any green left - you'll be surprised

I just replaced the flowers in my front urns. The refresh was worth it to me. I say go for it.

Yes, in fact I did just that because my petunias had gotten too leggy and I hate that. I put in vinca to replace them. My impatiens are being eaten alive by something and I can't wait until I can put some mums in there. I'm holding off on those though because they always end up looking like crap by the time fall officially hits if I plant them too early.

Mine are dead too....about to replace for my own enjoyment! I think I'll go with HARDY Geraniums this time though!

Yes, I would. In fact, I have the same problem, but it's because we were on vacation and I forgot to pull the pots off the porch so that they get rain water. They were still the pansies from the spring, so it wasn't a huge loss. But I plan to go to the garden center this afternoon.

petunias need to be watered until it runs out the bottom Yeah, I should have TEXTED him that detail. Instead I said, "make sure they get plenty of water" or something vague (and obviously, useless).

The mums are starting to be brought out around here. So maybe replace them with some mums that will last well into fall?

You might check to see if there is any green left. If so cut back to the green and they are likely to come back. However, if you don't want to wait you can probably get some good deals on new plants since the growing season is half over. Good luck.

Since they would be in a wheelbarrow, I would plant small ones and by the time fall gets here, you could throw in a couple of pumpkins, a small dried cornstalk and a scarecrow and have a nice fall container of flowers.

Yes, I would. Annuals are super cheap right now. Or, I'd go with mums for fall.

I lost three plant pots while we were on vacation and am trying to decide when to replace them, but for me it's because it's still so darned hot! Two of the dead ones were mums I was trying to keep til this fall....no such luck I hate planting now and have the heat kill them off, but I think I'm going for it anyway.

I've been seeing lots of articles either recommending cutting back container plants drastically or just buying new ones because they've really been around since January and are getting tired anyway.

This worked for my house plants when I was gone a couple of months one summer, so I suppose it would work for outdoor plants in containers. My (then) husband was very literal, so before I left, I watered all of my plants and counted 1-october, 2 october, etc. Then I gave him a card with instructions for each plant (large plant in bedroom, hanging plant by kitchen table, etc) how many to count - 3 octobers, 5 octobers, etc. and when I got back home, all of my plants were thriving and he was allowed to live in the house and not the doghouse.

I don't get it, they are the same type of flower as in my planters, and those ones I need to cut back they are getting to big. I don't want to spend more money on some thing for that short a time though, so I'm going to just toss the hanging and wait for the mums.
