i am having terrible problems with a class this semester. I am pretty sure they are insurmountable and at this point am not really interested in resolving them. Can I just get a F and let my gpa drop? Do I have to retake this class? Its noe taught by this one teacher and shes never going to pass me. Ever. Can I just get an F an move along?
Im going to look up into at my school, but wanted opinions. Thanks.

Can you drop the class to protect your gpa? Otherwise worst case you get an F and move on.
That sucks. Sorry you are having a rough time.

You don't get any credit for a class you receive and F in, so if you need it for a requirement or major, you'll need to retake it.
If it was just an elective, theoretically you can let the F stand, but I wouldn't if I were you. Why do you think the instructor will never pass you? If you do the work to the required level, of course she will.

Is this a college class at an accredited college? I am certain you'd need to take the class again in order to receive credit for it. If you withdraw it should not effect your grade. Colleges/universities in Illinois have a withdraw by date. Can you talk to the teacher and ask for extra credit or help? If you have missed the withdraw date please try to do everything to get at a d in the class otherwise your GPA will be effected.

In some majors that would mean that you could NOT get a degree in that major. Try dropping the class instead. Sometimes a talk with the professor might mean you could get an incomplete and then finish the work by a particular deadline and get the credit.

I think you should call or go see your advisor and see if you can get a drop under special circumstances as I assume you are beyond the drop period.
Is it graduate or undergrad? In major or general requirement?

I would suggest talking to your advisor ASAP. If there's still time, drop the class. There could be consequences for dropping (such as, lost aid/scholarship money for the term, etc). If you can't drop, look into getting an incomplete.
There could also be similar consequences for failing a class.
If neither of those are options, talk to your professor. It might not be too late to turn things around.
Good luck to you.

Even if a drop is not possible, look into a withdrawal, even if it's a withdrawal failure. It looks a little better on a transcript even though it still counts in your gpa, especially if your remaining classes are high grades.
See your advisor asap to discuss your options and the ramifications.
And be careful how you explain this in the future. She will never pass you is not the answer if you are asked. Everyone knows it is possible to have THAT prof, but you will look less passive and victim-like if you analyze this as a learning experience about what you could have done differently, what you could do better, etc. YOU earn your grades.

In my school I was able to retake the class with another teacher and replace the grade. Maybe yours is like that as well.

I work at a large state university.
I would look into withdrawing from the class. The F will definitely hurt your GPA. Also, if you end up going to grad school (if this is an undergrad course), that F will be on your transcript FOREVER.
You should talk to your advisor immediately--the person who tells you what classes to take in your degree plan. They can best advise you as to what to do.
Speaking as a former college professor and high school teacher--have you talked to your professor? Have you attended extra tutoring? Have you done anything to help yourself that might help you get a better grade than an "F"?

Undergrad too late to drop i'll talk to a counselor tomorrow. Thanks. I failed an undergrad class and its only effect was lowering my GPA. My DH failed one too and he had to retake it to graduate. Two masters degrees between us, one from a top tier school, and half a doctorate later I can tell you it's not the end of the world. Stings the ego and damages the GPA a bit. You can recover just fine though. (I graduated with a 3.79 even though I failed a class.) You might also ask if you can convert your class to C/NC if you know it is mathematically impossible for you to pass.

But, it was the hardest class I've ever taken. The teacher taught by power point. I worked so hard outside of class just to understand it. It was demoralizing. I have to take another class, more advanced, with this same professor. I am dreading it. Don't accept the F. Do your best through the rest of the semester. Try again. Find a tutor.

Can you withdraw or get an incomplete? I'd rather have a W or I on my transcript than an F.

I got really sick one semester and ended up taking an incomplete rather than an F. There was a time period by which it had to be completed. That seems like a much better way to go than an F. Talk to your advisor's office ASAP.

Undergrad too late to drop i'll talk to a counselor tomorrow. Thanks. Have you talked to a prof? BTW, a prof doesn't pass you... you pass or you fail! Is it possible that all grades look low, but there is a curve? Again... Talk to the PROF.... It can't hurt and it may help!!

If only one professor teaches the class you might look to see if a community college offers that class.

((((Hugs)))) I took Econ101 THREE times as an undergrad...it was required for my major and I had to pass it.I did pass - with a C - eventually but ugh
The advise to try a community college if you have to retake is a good one. Also talk to the teacher. Look into tutoring. Look into those options - withdraw, incomplete ...

If only one professor teaches the class you might look to see if a community college offers that class. But please make sure that the credits will transfer and get that assurance in writing from your department, advisor, etc. Colleges can be quite picky about which credits from which community college they will accept.

See your advisor.
I am an academic advisor at a state university. At my school, you could have dropped the class with a W up until March 18. Now the only way to get out of it without an F would be to withdraw from the University altogether ( or if you can talk to the professor and work out a way to improve your grade).
At my school, you can repeat any class one time for academic forgiveness if (1) you have fewer than 60 attempted hours, (2) you received a D or F in the course, and (3) you repeat it at the University or one of our branch campuses. The original grade still appears in your transcript, but the second grade replaces the first for purposes of GPA calculation.
Many schools have similar policies. See your advisor to find out if your school offers something like this and whether or not you qualify. Your advisor can also help you determine how this affects any financial aid you might receive.
If you do not qualify to repeat with forgiveness, you might be better off taking the course elsewhere over the summer and transferring credit back if the course is required for your major and you really want to avoid this professor.
Good luck!

Already checked, class cannot be taken ar community college ans transferred.
I'll post what the counselor says. Talking to prof probably wont help. She perfectly nice but extremely rigid. I wont get any extras for being a swell gal!

Hopefully, talking to the professor will help with the content - whether it's through tutoring or other extra help or other resources to help with the coursework.

You won't get a better grade for being swell, but you might be able to pull up your grade if you're willing to work.
Your prof should have office hours - I would suggest you go to them to discuss your performance.
Where are you struggling?
Missing assignments? Maybe you can turn them in late for partial credit.
Poor exam grade? Can you do research on the components you scored poorly on a write a paper to show your mastery of the topic for extra points?
Low grade on a paper? Can you rewrite for additional points?
Even if she says no to those things, maybe you could go to the student center/get a tutor, maybe there is a curve or extra credit opportunities.

If it's too late to drop the class without penalty, can you audit it for the rest of the semester? That way it won't show up as an F or incomplete, and it might help when you retake the class in the future (if you have to).
