I've noticed that
A. The men with long hair always use a leather tie to pull it back (never an elastic band or GOD FORBID, a scrunchy).
B. The result is never called a 'pony tail'.
C. The current author I've been reading likes to use the word 'seed' in the erm... action scenes. This is a new one to me, and I have a few dozen books of the genre under my belt.
D. Many of the male images sporting the book covers have their heads cut off. That isn't to say they are headless, but rather the illustrator chose to zoom in on the muscled torso, leaving no room in the rectangular space for the fellow's face.
Any observations you'd like to share on book genres you've been exploring?

I've never gotten too deep into that genre. I read Patricia Briggs and that's about it. She's quite mild, though so you may not like them.  The covers all have women who could have inspired "Brick House" and if there's a man, he's very much in the background. The men in the books mostly keep their hair short, but if it is long it's because they are part Native American and of course they'll use a leather thong to pull their hair back. Because Native American men always have long hair they pull back with a leather strap they happened to have handy after doing hunter-y/manly things. |

I've been reading romance since before my teens. I find it harder to read now after 35+ years. I've paired down to one auto buy author (Ilona Andrews), but my kindle is bursting with downloads. Smart Bitches is my downfall when there are sales.
I laugh when people say that old skool romance wasn't so sexualized. They obviously never read Rosemary Rogers or Beatrice Small.
ETA: fixed my word omission that made it look like I dumped Ilona. They are my crack!

I giggled when the main character of a recent read refered to 'having pangs downstairs' everytime she laid eyes (and other parts of her anatomy) on her boyfriend.
One author used the word 'urgh' to denote ecstasy, to me it's a sound of disgust or revulsion not a word you want to hear when you're getting jiggy with it.
The morning after usually entails the man making breakfast in just his jeans with the button open.

Not noticed in the shifter genre, but the almost-p0rn genre - everything is either amble or throbs. EVERYTHING.
I've got plenty of things that are ample and throbbing and trust me, they are NOT sexy.

I'm just going to put this link here to show y'all what you're missing. I had no idea this was a genre . . . and would give my DS(17) a heart attack if I came home with one because he is most likely to pick up my books and read them . I can understand heads being cut off because that allows you to fill in the blank with whomever you are lusting after at the moment, but why aren't ponytails called ponytails? Are they manes? Or just described but not named (the Voldemort of shifter almost p0rn)? |
