Does that drive you crazy? I mean we all have full keyboards on our iphones, there's no reason to type in shorthand. And why do they need to shave off 1 second of their typing time? lol It takes me more time to figure out what they are saying. So I have an acquaintance who texts like this, at first I would respond with ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) or ask what they meant. Then I would just ignore the texts I thought were stupid. Finally this person wasn't getting my drift I came out and said typing like that makes you look "illiterate" and person responded that "illiterate is the incorrect word ...FYI...Ignorant statement..." Needless to say, I think it's safe to assume we will no longer be communicating. lol

Unless you are under the age of 13....type out your words when texting me.

I only have one person who texts like that, and it's my 77 year old father, and yes, it's ridiculously stupid. Even the grandkids who are 15-26 think it's ridiculous.
However, I would never say anything to him about it. That would be just as rude.

I don't know all the text shorthand, but I am trying to learn it. It's the way of the future. Now, I DON'T think it belongs in school essays, professional communications, etc.

Why limit your complaint to texting. What about posting here. I know there are lists somewhere that will tell me what those letters mean but why would I waste the time looking. I think I miss the humour in some posts because the humour is embedded in the stupid letters.
The worst for me are the television shows that people post about and only use letters to denote the show's title. I read their message and all it says is "did you see last night's show, what did you think". So I don't bother to go back to those threads.
And I just love the ones that someone wishes to discuss their disease but only give letters as if I should know every disease by its short form. Why can't they give the full name of the disease at the beginning and then I don't care if they use the short form because they have told me what they are talking about.
I know some do it to speed up things but mainly I just guess that the person cannot spell the words.

Is it the shorthand or this persons comunication style.
Frankuly, i understand you in the following " I came out and said typing like that makes you look "illiterate" and person responded that "illiterate is the incorrect word ...FYI...Ignorant statement..." But the other person's statement of wrong word and the statement is ignorant? That in itself is confusing to me.
I myself have been known to use shorthand and often find it entertaining. Lol

That makes me crazy, anywhere. We have a friend on face book that types out everything except the word "you", he will just type "u". Really, those two extra letters were beyond you? Agh.

Oh my Gawd YES, YES and YYEEESSSSSS!! And not just texting; people who speak like this, or write in a letter/email or even here. lol For goodness's sake type out your message, it takes a whole 3 secs.
Also, when texting, quickly proof your message because I have no idea what your auto-correct is trying to tell me. lol

This is what texting is for, in my opinion. It's the most casual form of communication. Save the more formal, complete word format for conversation, emails, essays, etc. Always amazing, what bothers the peas.

Sometimes I use shorthand because I am truly in a hurry (i.e. standing in line, and it is now my turn), but I try to only use the fairly common abbreviations. And it does sometimes get frustrating trying to type out perfect sentences on a keypad that is only a couple of inches wide.

Makes me mental.
I personally use the "talk to text" feature on my phone. Bingbangboom, the text is done and about 3 minutes faster than it would have been with my texting style.

It is a swipe keyboard, but I mostly use it for it's outstanding predictive feature. When you are typing, there is a bar across the keyboard top that shows 3 potential words you might want to use. Tap on the word and continue on. The predictive part has learned my most common messages and most of the time I hardly need to actually type out a word.

I have a friend - and I do love her dearly -- but her use of "text shorthand" makes me crazy -- or cringe when I see her do it on her professional Facebook page! Okay -- I just nearly responded to another post with O.M.G. ..... I guess that would be okay!!

Thanks!

It doesn't bother me that much. My boss uses lol, brb, tx, pls, and a few others. 99.9% of the time I can figure her out just fine.
I figure folks use different language in different forms of communication. Looser use of language in texting doesn't really bother me. Folks who can't string together a coherent set of words in a business email, that bothers me.

I wasn't referring to the acronyms so much. I'm more talking about "u", "ur", "2", or those type of things. It's seriously only a couple more letters, and in the time of smart phones, half of the time you type one letter and it auto-generates the rest for you!

I don't care much in texts. I do care in formal writing and speech. I also don't know anyone who is particularly bad about this; maybe I'd feel otherwise if I did.

My friend and I can have entire conversations with just emojis. We have so much fun doing that. Other than those, I usually use complete words because I can't remember the acronyms.

This is what texting is for, in my opinion. It's the most casual form of communication. Save the more formal, complete word format for conversation, emails, essays, etc. Always amazing, what bothers the peas. The invention of texting is absolutely where it came from, when you used nine keys and had to hit them multiple times to come up with a single letter, heaven forbid you missed that letter and had to go around again. Same for the origination of shorthand, when a secretary, etc, had to handwrite dictation. But, when the invention of the dictation machine and then computers came along, shorthand fell by the wayside because you could then type out what was dictated instead of needing to scribble quickly everything that was said. I feel the same way about texting. We don't need to use "u" or "ur" anymore, it's not *that* much of a timesaver. It actually takes MORE time to type "gr8" than "great" or "2" instead of "to" because you have to change the keyboard to the number board on my phone at least. Acronyms are different, in my opinion, as long as they are widely known.

I do this not because the two extra letters take too long but because I hit multiple keys with my fingers and the auto correct is awful. So I stuck with 'u' because it's more understandable that some of the autocorrects

I despise it.
Unless you are 4 and legitimately think you is spelled u or you still have a flip phone from 1998, there is no reason or excuse to text like that. You look ridiculous.
It's even worse when people write like that here.

I try to take a quick glance and fix any typos. However there are times when I'm in a hurry, distracted or just don't "see" something. My vent is more to the people who have these issues all. the. time. (Yes sister dear I'm talking about you. lol)

LOL I didn't even see that. My vent, what bothers me personally, isn't so much the occasional abbreviation (omg, fyi, lol etc) but people who's entire message is just a seemingly random mish-mash of letters. I've received texts that looked like this : omg lol cu 4 dn 2nt. fyi G wbt lol emoji emoji emoji lmnop ttyl....I'm reading it thinking oh my God I'm having a stroke.
