Y u b h8n? See....to me it's like I'm trying to read a damn personalized plate. It takes too much of my thought process so I just ignore the text.

Y u b h8n? Hahaha and now I have to clean coffee off my keyboard! I work with a couple of teens who will text me something like "wyd rn" and it was a struggle at first to decode, but I'm usually pretty proud of myself when I figure it out. I drive them nuts by texting full sentences back ![](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) . I do regularly use acronyms here (FTR, TBH, IIRC, IMO, etc.) that I would type out if emailing or using some other form of written communication.

I used to use abbreviations years ago when I had a terrible texting plan and one of those phones where you had to press the key 4 times to get to the one you want.

Ugh. Speak to text is totally a different beast. I have a friend that uses it almost exclusively and SIRI cannot understand her at all. She will even proofread the texts, see that they make NO sense, and still send them because she thinks it's hilarious. I used to try to decode them, or ask what the hell she said, now I just ignore them. She's a very close friend, so I told her I ignore half her texts. She's okay with it. :-)

Good point. LOL I didn't even see that. My vent, what bothers me personally, isn't so much the occasional abbreviation (omg, fyi, lol etc) but people who's entire message is just a seemingly random mish-mash of letters. I've received texts that looked like this : omg lol cu 4 dn 2nt. fyi G wbt lol emoji emoji emoji lmnop ttyl.... I'm reading it thinking oh my God I'm having a stroke.I hereby award you the "Funniest comment of the week" award.

The only think that bugs me is when someone is telling a story about their medical issues and use shorthand for the issue. I have NO idea what those are. If you don't want to type it out several times in a post, at least type it all out once, THEN abbreviate.

Drives me crazy too. Neither of my kids will text like that and it annoys them too.
I follow Chelsea Clinton on Facebook. She'll write out a paragraph describing something awesome someone or some organization has done...everything spelled out correctly and then she'll toss in a "grt" or something like that. Drives me batty.

I have a guy at work who texts me sometimes. The first few times he texted "cya" I couldn't figure out why I needed to cover my ass. It took me a while to realize he meant it as "See ya!" It would have been so much easier (and the same number of letters) to say "Bye."

I'm with those who are a little mental over this issue. I get it, it's "just texting," but it still bothers me. For grown adults, it probably is just short hand, but I tutor high school students and I believe it's part of the dumbing down of a generation. It's reflected in their writing...I'm astonished at the errors I see. They sometimes don't see any difference between informal and formal writing.

I've cautioned my students about writing this way. I ignore emails with such abbreviations and won't grade written responses either. I have seen a sharp decrease in writing in the past five years or so.

Why limit your complaint to texting. What about posting here. I know there are lists somewhere that will tell me what those letters mean but why would I waste the time looking. I think I miss the humour in some posts because the humour is embedded in the stupid letters. The worst for me are the television shows that people post about and only use letters to denote the show's title. I read their message and all it says is "did you see last night's show, what did you think". So I don't bother to go back to those threads. And I just love the ones that someone wishes to discuss their disease but only give letters as if I should know every disease by its short form. Why can't they give the full name of the disease at the beginning and then I don't care if they use the short form because they have told me what they are talking about. I know some do it to speed up things but mainly I just guess that the person cannot spell the words. Yup.

This is a huge pet peeve of mine as well! I agree, it just makes the person look really immature. My middle schoolers text that way. I really think adults can take the time to form complete words. I absolutely LOATHE when I see an adult female acquaintance respond on FB with: "gr8t pics!" It really took less time to make an 8 than to type "ea"? I think not. And "ur".... c'mon! Just type your/you're. It will take you maybe one nanosecond longer.
And what is with the "Kk?" I don't get it. Never have. For kids, fine. But adults? Why are we not typing "Ok?" Weirdness.
Wow it felt good to get that out. ha ha!

What I hate more than annoying abbreviations are texts where the user hits enter after EVERY sentence. My SIL and cousin do this all the time and it drives me nuts receiving 10 consecutive texts telling me about their shopping trip!

Are we posting our writing peeves? I've got two:
When. people. write. out. like. this.
When what they are saying requires no emphasis whatsoever in relation to what they are writing about. It is no different than misusing quotation marks.
The other is when they use acronyms and then write out the whole version in parenthesis, and then never use the acromyn again in their post. What is the point? Write it out all and be done with it!
I just want to say HB2U (happy birthday to you)

katlady How old is your iPhone? My 5s gives me 3 choices of words. Between where you type and the 1st row of letters, you should see a little bar- pull it down and you'll see the words.

I have a 6s+ now, but back in the day, when I still had a 4s, my friends with droids could do that swipey thing with their keypads. I don't know, they didn't have to actually tap each key, just swipe.

Going to the number screen is quicker than typing one? No it's not, and it looks dumb.

omg lol cu 4 dn 2nt. fyi G wbt lol emoji emoji emoji lmnop ttyl....I'm reading it thinking oh my God I'm having a stroke. Literally LOL'd at that!!! I only have one person who texts like that, and it's my 77 year old father, and yes, it's ridiculously stupid. Even the grandkids who are 15-26 think it's ridiculous. The biggest offender in my FB circle is a woman in her 70s. She always uses ur, u, thanx, 2, thru, abt, 4, b, 2nite, and my most despised of all - gr8. I think she does it 2 b cool 4 her grands. Like others have mentioned, it actually takes MORE time to use numbers in words when you have to switch to a different keyboard.

Totally my dad!! He texts like a 12 year old and he's 76. It's crazy trying to read his texts. He will abbreviate every word into something barely legible. Arrrgggg

I think if you want a real conversation then call the person. I'm a fan of having entire conversations in emojis. Bitmojis are even better ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg)
