Where did the term "spendy" come from? It seems to have replaced "expensive". Is it a regional thing? Or come from a particular country? It grates on my nerves.

I don't know anyone locally that uses that term, I've just seen it a couple of times on message boards. I do have a British friend that uses it occasionally.

Midwest for sure. I've heard it used in place of expensive and by elderly people so it's not a trendy word.

I use it all the time. Spendy is actually used for something that's more expensive than I would normally spend on that item, but still less than something i would term as expensive. Sort of like tiny is smaller than small.

It's trying to look cute about being judgy. Meh. I have never heard it used as a judgmental statement here. Or cute. It's generally used for something that is a bit more expensive than you thought it was going to be. I am in Iowa - I hear it all the time. Right along with "HOLY BUCKETS - that was SPENDY"

Sort of like tiny is smaller than small. Exactly this. If it's expensive I can't afford it. Spendy is something that I can afford with some budgeting. I use it quite often.

If you don't live in certain areas, you probably won't hear it used. It's just like in Europe where they use the term "handy" for a cell phone.
Just like y'all isn't used in California or New York.

I only ever see "spendy" used online. I tend to think the person is trying to be cute or trendy when using it.
