Ugh, I hate how much we pay for cable. Just had a long "chat" with them this AM to get a handle on what costs what.
My dd had recently said her friend got a chromecast stick or something because she had no cable on her tv. So I did some looking and the firestick seems to be the way to go. But i'm curious since i've never dealt with something like it. It says it has a lot of apps. Our internet connection is pretty good and kids watch netflix on ipads w/wifi.
It looks regular channels like CBS, NBC, etc., are available on the firestick. Would it be right to assume that if you watched a sitcom on NBC that you could watch it anytime? Do you have to watch things live or are the available after the live broadcasts?
Assume things like mtv are unavailable unless you have some sort of cable?
Any info would be appreciated. Only streaming we've done is Netflix so i'm not really too well versed in all this.

You have to pay extra for the channels. And they are not available in my area. So check that out You can also get rabbit ears for local channels... but again check to see if they work in your area... they don't in mind. We use Amazon and Netflix, I pay for HBO when Game of Thrones is on, and Showtime to watch Homeland. But I don't pay for them year round. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

I have the Firestick and love it but it is not a replacement for regular network channels
There is an NBC app where you can watch episodes starting the day after they air. There is the CBS all access app, which I believe is similar. But I haven't found an ABC app (There are also HBO A&E & the History channel, Food network).
I use it primarily for Netflix and Amazon Prime videos.
I love the Firestick - great product and a good price

I have Firesticks on almost all the TVs. But like disneypal said, it isn't a replacement for network shows. They will be on Amazon as they air, but are usually 1.99 per episode or something like $19-29 for the whole season. They are usually free once the next season begins airing, but not always. I mostly use it for movies and a few older shows I didn't watch when they originally aired, like Downtown Abbey, I didn't watch it till it was on season 5, I was late the party lol. I buy movies on it a lot instead of DVDs now, I love that I can unplug it from my tv and take it to a friends to watch movies or shows!

I have a fire stick and I pay for commercial free hulu. I watch most of my network shows on hulu. Most shows only have the 5 most recent episodes available so you have to keep up or risk missing episodes. We got rid of cable 2 years ago and I don't miss it at all. I watch way less tv now when I used to just turn it on and leave it on all day. Now I only turn it on when I have a plan to watch something.

We cut the cable last month. We already had Amazon Prime and Netflix so no extra cost there. I prepaid 3 months of SlingTV ($20/mo) and received a FireTV box for 1/2 price. We use that box in our bedroom and XBox One on our living room tv. We also have digital antennas hooked to our 3 TVs for over air channels. It's been less of a challenge than I expected. I pay for sling to get AMC (The Walking Dead) and CNN. My DH is a 24hr news junkie. I'm currently getting HBO Now on a 1 month free trial. SlingTV has add on bundles with more channels for $5-10/month. Everything is start/cancel at will.

In addition to what the other posters have said you need to check into if you have a data cap on your internet connection. Technically I don't, but if I stream 3 or 4 hours at a time Comcast throttles my internet speed.

I have one in my office but I only use it for Netflix/Amazon PrimeTV. Make sure if there's something specific you're looking for that you google it's availability for the Fire *stick*. I don't have cable wired to my office and I'd like to stream it but the TWC app isn't available on the stick, only the original FireTV.
