Oh hey I learned a new dish I've never made in the what's for dinner threads I'm planning on it this week so I'll see what they say. ( if anything )

I've never had/never made hamburger casserole. I'm gobsmacked my mother never fed me that. Seriously I've been fed every other chopped Meat dish under the sun, but not that. Maybe it was the lack of biscuits/puff pastry for her celiac condition? I can't wait!

They'd be coming up with the menu or eat a sandwich. 

When the kids were still at home the rule was simple. If you don't like what is for dinner then you can make yourself peanut butter toast(no allergies in my house). No other option.

Now that it is just DH and I, it's a different story. He will eat what I cook but only a teeny, tiny amount and then an hour later he is making the kitchen a total mess making himself something to eat.

If he were to ask for something specific I would make it but he doesn't.

Mine don't ask what's for dinner anymore because my answer was always 'food'

I was going to say that having only myself to cook for is one of my favorite things about being single. And most of the time that's true. But even with it being just me, I will often struggle with, 'Hmmm what should I have for dinner tonight?'

You know, I'm one of those people who likes to think that she "loves to cook," but it's not really true when it comes to everyday, workaday meal prep. I do love to cook for an occasion, for a holiday, for company coming over for something special. But everyday meal prep (the planning, the shopping, the cooking, the cleaning) can be such a thankless task (and it really is a lot of work!), especially when you have a couple of ingrates turning up their noses at what you just spent an hour or more to produce.

"Oh, whatever you decide," they'll say, or "whatever you feel like making." But then, once you've made it: "This?" or "Oh, don't worry about me. I'll just heat up one of those frozen Jamaican beef patties from Costco." Well, okay, but then why did I even bother to make supper?

I have to say, my mother (who fed six people, three times a day, for about thirty years) would not have put up with this nonsense. "What's for dinner?" was whatever she put on your plate, and you damn well ate what was in front of you, or you went to bed hungry. And sometimes when we got all demanding and entitled with our whiney "Mum, what's for dinner?" she would reply, "What's for dinner? Shit on a stick."

(I really miss my dear little mum, btw. Funniest woman I will ever know, and she taught us how to laugh at ourselves).

I learned a long time ago that asking for dinner ideas from everyone in the family was a super bad idea. One, they always disagreed on what they wanted or had no ideas to offer. Two, they'd forget or deny that they'd requested Y for dinner, which would piss me off something fierce.

I now have a rotating list of meals that most everyone likes that I cook every week and I ask no one for input. Ever. If one doesn't like that night's offering, they have their list of alternatives that they make for themselves.

I also reserve the right to make at least 2 new things a month and all have to try it. If it's flop, then, well. Better luck tomorrow night. Feel free to make your alternative. And clean up when you're dnoe.

Well, it's nice to know I'm not alone! I work straight afternoon shift Mon-Thurs and always make sure there is a good dinner waiting for them when they are ready for it. I can never get any helpful ideas from them. Them being DH & DD (22). So 3 adults in the house and I still do all the meal planning, prep, shopping & cooking. If I didn't like to have a good dinner ready for myself to take to work I'd just let them fend for themselves.

On my days off though it is usually a fend for yourself dinner. I basically spend one of my days off doing the planning, list and shopping and then on Sunday's I try to get two meals prepared ahead of time. So I still spend way too much of MY weekend dealing with dinners. Not to mention that even when they decide to make something on the weekend there's never a "Hey! Want some?" thrown my way. Can you tell I harbour quite a bit of anger over this issue!! LOL!!
