I wasn't born yet, but I had a long fascination with the Cold War. This is a fascinating - and chilling - story. TFS!

Very interesting! I am going to share with my mom-who has VERY vivid memories of the time period. She was born and raised in Central Florida and they were all terrified. She was a freshman in high school and still remembers the nightmares she had of bombs dropping on her town.
Later on, when I was in high school and the tv movie about the nuclear bombing from Russia (I can't remember the name but it was in the early 80's) she and her sisters all got together and came up with a *just in case* plan and where we were all to meet-because they still remembered how close it came to actually happening. They made all of us kids memorize the plan to the letter.

The crisis changed my life completely. I was a freshman in high school and my daddy was planning to retire after a 20-year career in submarines. We were going to stay in Hawaii. Then the Cuban Missile Crisis occurred and Kennedy froze all retirements.So daddy re-enlisted for 4 more years ~ a week later the crisis was averted and Kennedy lifted the freeze. We were transferred to a reserve sub on the Mississippi River in New Orleans and the rest is history.  Oh, and my dad retired after 30 years! |
