Go to Ulta or Sephora and tell them what you are looking for and get help! I was always buying this product or that, never loving anything.

One day I decided to go in to Ulta and tell them I wanted some new under eye concealer and foundation. She sat me down and tried out some that she recommended. Bought and loved what she tried on me. Another day decided I hated all the mascara's i'd tried...went in and told the girl I needed something new, but not waterproof. She gave 2 recommendations and then gave her advice based on my lash type. Again love it! I'm totally hooked on Ulta type placed now.

I wasted a lot of money on cheaper products because I didn't like them for various reasons in the end. It was worth the money to me to spend a little more for someone to help me pick the right products!

You may find lining your eyes with eye shadow and a fine dense brush works better to give a softer look, or use eye liner pencil and smudge and soften it a bit.

Your skin sounds exactly the same as mine, and I am a similar age with ages spots.  I do a couple of things.  Either Estée Lauder maximum wear over the age spots and Bare Minerals original buffed over everywhere else, or I have recently bought the Estée Lauder double wear foundation which is really high coverage but can be put on sparingly and gives a matte finish.  I go between the different options. The max coverage one can even cover tattoos so only a tiny little bit is needed.  Both the EL foundations are expensive but their counters will colour match you and give you a sample to take away and try at home before buying a full size.

I've always worn a little makeup - powder and a bit of blush, and eyeliner - but at 45 I was enabled by the peas to buy an Urban Decay naked 2 palette and from there I've progressed to putting everything on!  I quite enjoy the few minutes in the morning it takes to put make up and I'm enjoying wearing it and experimenting.  
I also watch quite a few videos and reviews in YouTube.

It cosmetics line. I love their cc cream foundation. Light, creamy, blends nice. I think you should go to Sephora or Ulta and sample a few before you buy. Just to see what kind of coverage you need.

I will be 51 in June. I have worn Lucy Minerals for gosh maybe 7 years. LOVE the stuff. I have rosacea, and you can't even see it when I wear the mineral powder. I have tried zillions of other brands including Mary Kay, Bare Minerals, you name it. None work for me like Lucy Minerals. She also has trial sizes to get the correct colors first.

I second Lisa Eldridge on YouTube, her advice is just so sensible and well thought out.
Personally I think that the best way to find your look is just to play with make up, you'll often find me with two totally different made up eyes trying out looks. A harsh line of black under the eyes is very aging on most people and tends to look old fashioned, I keep liner for my top lid (never black) and use a smudge of eye shadow under the lower.



It sounds like you're using too much, try using less and use a beauty blender or real techniques sponge.

Gentle cleanser, great moisturizer and SPF is the minimum of what every woman needs when they hit 40.  When the fine lines start showing a little more add a serum with your moisturizer at night.


Also, don't forget to drink your water!!!

I am a strictly Bare Minerals gal, except that I do wear lots of different brands of lipstick. W/Bare Minerals I don't feel like I'm wearing make-up and it's the only eye make up I've ever worn that I can remotely tolerate.

I was going to make this same suggestion! She is a great resource. 

I use It cosmetics, but sometimes will try different items. I just started using Rimel's 25 hour Long Last foundation. It has good coverage.

I am in love with Smashbox Photo Finish Primer (clear) topped with Revlon Colorstay Whipped foundation. That seems to eliminate most of the issues of makeup settling in fine lines. I set my face with Bare Minerals, but I avoid the undereye area with powder or I look crepey. As in, crepes suzette, not creepy. LOL

No eyeliner? HELL NO. This is me without my eyeliner:

I love Bobbi Brown. I use a powder underliner but I only underline from the pupil to the outer corner. It is much less harsh but still defines my eyes.

I am 45 and I am partial to my Makeup Forever HD Foundation...although I hate shelling out for it. It is $$$!
I used to have nice thick lashes, but, as I got older they have thinned considerably, so now I do lash extensions. I go in every 3 weeks for a fill, and I love them. They save me so much time putting on makeup! I just do quick foundation or BB cream, cream blush (dewy finish/less aging), brows, brush out my lashes, lip gloss, and done! Sounds like a lot, but I can do it in under 5 minutes. Also saves me time taking off makeup at night...don't have to deal with taking off mascara and heavy eye makeup.
