A good moisturizer is key for the base of everything. If you have fine lines on your face, I would stay away from the Bare Minerals products. I've found they tend to accentuate lines instead of hiding them. I second going to Ulta, Sephora or a makeup counter at a department store. They can be very helpful, although I would try to find a salesperson or makeup artist that approximates your skin tone and age. Most of them recommend what they know and like and that could be very different from your situation. When you make this trip, take a trusted friend along with you to try out different looks and make sure you let them know your needs and likes / dislikes.

If you like the colors of the UD Naked palettes, particularly Naked 3, but don't like glitter shadow on your mature eyes, try the Tarte Tartelette 1 palette. Nice neutrals with a few pink-toned ones, and all matte colors.

Be warned: sometimes a makeover at Sephora can be WAY too much makeup. Also some of the "sales" people are actually brand representatives, so they will try to steer you towards that certain brand.
You don't have to buy expensive items to look good. I try very hard to only buy cruelty free brands and I have a lot of IT, ELF and Wet n Wild items that are very good (the first two more than the latter). Too Faced also has some wonderful items, particularly their Primed and Poreless, one of the very few higher priced items I will repurchase. If you have some visible pores, use this product like spackle; take a small amount and rub it into those areas being sure to go in every direction. Works really well.
YouTube is a great resource. You can find many tutorials for mature women, but also for inexpensive dupes for high priced products. Once you start poking around you'll find more and more videos.

A friend told me the other day no mascara on the bottom. I am honestly not sure if that is for any age or for us a little seasoned. I did it today and do like the look of it.
I love Urban Decay eyeliner because it is gel and easily goes on. It isn't dry.
I use a BB cream but even with that I have 2 moisturizers that I mix in with it. I know, I am weird. I use a lush (Drink) moisturizer, mix the BB cream with it and than add a squirt of reg Neurtrogena and than mix it all up. I didn't even wear anything on my skin (BB cream or cover like that) until 5 years ago. I have always moisturized just didn't need cover so much.

Make sure you have a good base to build on-- use a great moisturizer for your skin and a primer under your foundation is also helpful for a good start. Agree with the suggestion to get professional one on one assistance to find the right products. It is frustrating to just randomly pick products and then find out you don't like them. Don't get discouraged if that happens, just keep trying things and asking for input. Remember too that most places will take returns on unused makeup if you end up not liking it. Good luck and have fun! Gentle cleanser, great moisturizer and SPF is the minimum of what every woman needs when they hit 40. When the fine lines start showing a little more add a serum with your moisturizer at night. Also, don't forget to drink your water!!! IMO, it is better to try to prevent the wrinkles rather than wait for them to show up and then decide to do something about them.

I love, love, love Mary Kay tinted moisturizer and primer. That combo is amazing on my skin. Plus, it is enough SPF to get me through a day at the beach or ballpark. The tinted moisturizer has been discontinued and replaced with CC cream. It's great as it contains moisturizer and an SPF. Here's a link to information about it on my web site.

I sort of gave up make up when I had kids...we have a new Ulta here and a Sephora opening in June. I decided it's time to reinvent myself and went to Ulta. They listened thoughtfully to what I wanted and I had an amazing experience there and came out with products that suit my needs and work for me.

I read on a blog somewhere about Argon oil moisturizer being a good fit for mature skin. I bought some on Amazon just to try it out and I really like it. It makes my skin super soft and my makeup stays put longer. I highly recommend it.
