I've never had one. Now that I'm totally off of sugar... i think it would be torture to use one.
What sorts of things do you use it for?

Get this. It's awesome. I gave one to my sister-in-law for Christmas and ended up picking up one for myself, too. It has a pot clip so that you can use it for oil and candy. I buy the cheaper manual candy thermometers. I have invested in some high end digital ones but with all the caramel making I do they just end up wearing out. I buy the old fashioned ones 2-3 at a time and they get me through my busy season. I think it was Alton Brown who said to go cheap since they need to be replaced all the time. Now, I'm using them for temps up to 310, warming milk, etc won't wear them out as quickly.
