There's no creature on earth that terrifies me more than a raccoon. Except maybe a tarantula or a cobra. The pest control guy hopefully can see where the evil, rabies-infested, distemper-filled little fuck is getting in and you will need to be sure it's repaired/sealed once they get it out of there.
I have the chills just thinking about that Devil's handmaiden lurking above your head...

Yeah, she shook the shit out of them. There is no known rabies on the island right now which is good. They used to get into the grapes we had on the deck. She was a formidable protector of all things raccoon. We do not miss them fighting with cats nor bugging the old woman nor the huge mess they made with the grapes and grape vines on the deck. At all.

Get rid of it ASAP! My DS had one in the attic and it gave birth up there. My DIL is still traumatized 5 years later!

We had raccoons in our attic in our lake house. The pest control guy trapped them and then released them in the woods miles away. We patched the hole they were coming through and haven't had any trouble since, knock on wood.

We had them in the attic. We weren't sure what it was at first. We heard terrible squealing going on up there in the night. Then one morning I went outside and saw a racoon sitting in the tree. He proceeded to climb up the tree, onto the roof and down the chimney! Our chimney does not go to a fireplace anymore. It was converted into a closet in my son's room and the fireplace was removed from downstairs long ago.(The house was built in the 1860s).
I called a pest control company that specializes in raccoons. The put a trap door on the chimney whereby the racoon could leave the attic but could not get back in. That stayed on for a few weeks to make sure that the raccoons were all out. Then they took off the trap door (to use at the next house) and put a permanent cover on the chimney. Luckily there were no babies or it would have been a lot more expensive to get rid of them. The guy said that you know if you have babies because they are very noisy.
Here there isn't much point in actually trapping the raccoons because by law they are not allowed to remove them farther than a kilometre. It wouldn't take the raccoons long to come back. I think we have one that stays in our garage, which is more like a barn. The door freezes open in the winter which makes it hard to keep them out. They are always trying to get into our garbage. We had a skunk living in our garage one winter. I really didn't care for that!
Good luck!

My Grandma had a dog that would tree a coon. Grandma would get out her 20 gauge and drop that coon right out of the tree! LOL It was a sight to behold.. and you did not F with Grandma!
They can tear a house apart in no time. I can't believe what coons can do to an old house or shed.
We live trap them on the farm, because we also have barn kitties that we don't want to hurt in a conibear - but they don't get to participate in the catch & release program.
When it is fur season and they are super thick my kids use .22's or bats and spend a couple nights thinning them out. I hate them because they are so disease filled. (The coons, not my kids....)

We had one fall through our ceiling. There was a tropical depression, tons of rain and a leak developed in the roof over the utility room. There was a mother raccoon up there with three babies and when the sheetrock softened from the water she fell through the ceiling. I heard the crash, opened the door and their she was. Luckily there was an exterior door close by so chased her out with a broom.
At the time we did know know about the babies and of course Mr. Nature D/H said she would not be back and it would be fine to leave the hole open until the next day. Well big mistake because she came back around 4AM. She chewed her way through the louvered door leading into the main part of the house and was cruising around the open beams in the bird room. Chased her out again and this time we immediately covered the opening.
Later that day I was watching tv and heard a rustling coming from the plant shelf above me in the family room. I looked up and there were three baby raccoons watching tv too. We caught them and released them outside so the mother could find them.
Now we regulary check for and access points and spray the roof eaves with ammonia.

Holy crap you guys are scaring me and i've never had a raccoon encounter! We had a bat last year, which we got out of the house, but wanted the attic checked. I kept calling people until I got one that would come out THAT day! Any chance you have more options? Another pest service? Animal control? Non-emergency police dept for suggestions on more people that might hand this?
And how the heck does one even get in the attic? Please keep us updated.

We had a racoon get in our crawl space and have babies years ago. We pulled out the babies and then tried to live trap mamma. she had none of it. We ended up taking the babies to a rehabber and then mamma was MAD. she kept going into the crawl space and tearing chunks out of the FLOOR trying to get into the house. A couple nights later we had a huge flood in the house from a pipe coming loose in the night. I still think it was her that caused it. Put 5000 gallons through the house and $20k in damages! Got rid of the racoon though. lol

Good that you called pest control. They will get rid of the animal and seal up any opening that they are getting in from. Now can I tell you the bad news? Our neighbor had this happen so it's not my direct experience, but observation. In addition to getting rid of them and sealing off the entry point, they had to tear out the insulation and ceilings in most of the house.

She had babies and we paid almost $1000 for removal of her, and said babies! ![>:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/superangry.png) But, the professional did seal up the entrance so it won't happen again. On a side note - This is in the middle of the city, neighborhood - no wooded or water area, neighbors on all sides - she was just looking for a safe place to give birth. Good Luck - I hate raccoons!

Get it out. Their scat has spores in it that are bad for human lungs........... Not only that, around 85% of them have roundworm and shed the eggs in their feces. If a human or pet accidentally ingests them it can be fatal. The eggs can live in the soil for years.
