If so, what was it like. Were the kitties interested in interacting with you?
DD and I are going to one on Friday. Just wondering what to expect.
Seattle Meowtropolitan
4-11-16 UPDATE We went on Saturday. The setup is very cool. You walk into the café portion. They have coffee drinks and pastries. You can just be in the café and not enter the cat portion (you have to walk through two separate sets of doors to get into the cat area. There are large windows that allow you to look into the cat area if you are in the café.
They only allow a set number of folks into the cat area every hour. We got there a few minutes early and chilled in the café watching through the window until it was our turn. I think there were around 12 in our group. Our appointment was for 1:00 pm. A lot of the kitties were sleeping. Some woke up and became more interactive after we arrived and some didn't. They hung out in little perches where you could pet them or parked themselves up high enough that you couldn't touch them. They have a strict no picking up rule and asked that you pay attention to the cat's signals and leave them alone if they didn't want to interact. There were two employees in the room with us who could answer questions and make sure everything was going OK.
Overview of most of the room. Look on the cat walk above the window and notice the kitty hanging out up there. This guy stayed up there for the whole hour. He seemed to be more interested in looking out the window than into the room. Although, towards the end of the visit, he turned around and was a bit more interested in us.
DD playing with one of the kitties.
Same kitty sitting in her perch...she is one of the house cats, meaning she lives there and is not adoptable. There were around 15 cats there and it was about 50/50 split between house cats and adoptable cats. She looks pretty serious in this photo but was playful and got up later to wander around.
Sleepy kitty...this kitty was obviously tuckered out from playing earlier in the day. If you walked up to pet him he would roll over on his back for you to scratch his tummy. But, he stayed sleeping for most of the visit. Towards the end someone started shaking a toy with a bell in it and that woke him up and got him out of his bed to investigate.
Playful kitty...this guy climbed on this higher shelf but kept trying to grab at anything he could through the hole in the shelf. He wanted to play, but didn't want to be on the floor.
We would definitely go back and go earlier in the day. It's $10 a person to be in the cat area.
We didn't get any drinks or food (we had just eaten lunch before our appointment), although most folks did. The $10 includes one free coffee beverage or hot chocolate. No one seemed to have a problem bringing their food into the cat area. None of the cats jumped up on any of the food tables, although they did walk around on the benches.

Never heard of such a thing, but what a great idea! One of my kids is a cat fanatic, but we can't have one because 3 of us are allergic. What a treat it would be to go and just play with the cats for a half hour or so. Google tells me there are a few in Manhattan - I will check them out!

We have one here too, but I haven't been yet. You'll have to let us know how it all goes.
They did a spot on the café on the local morning show one time and as the female reporter was signing off she said "wearing black pants to visit the cat café wasn't the most sensible clothing choice"...lol. She was probably trying to get the fur off her pants for days

The cat café should sell branded lint rollers for extra revenue.

We were going to go to the one in town as an end of the summer office activity last year, but all the menfolk vetoed. You will have to tell us about it and if you decide to take one home with you

I have! there is one here in Denver. When we went there were WAY more people there than cats. One sat on my daughter's lap for awhile, some were hanging with other people, but quite a few seemed freaked out and were hiding too.

I haven't been to one either, but I hope you have fun! My cats prefer that I don't pet other cats

I've never heard of a cat cafe, but what a fun concept. I love new ways to show the community adoptable rescue animals.

I wouldn't be opposed to going, but wouldn't adopt one. I'm allergic and would have to take benadryl ahead of time and hope I wouldn't itch too much. It's a shame, I do like them!

I've gone to one here in Portland with my teenage daughter. Some of the cats seemed excited to see us, and came right up to us and interacted with us immediately. Others were very shy, and stayed away the whole time we were there. And then there were the tweeners, who seemed really shy, until you picked up a favorite toy or gave a good head scratch; then you had a new best friend!

There is one in Guelph near my DD's university.
She has gone, and LOVED it.
At this location you had to purchase food/drink before you could go back and hang with the cats. DD and her friend were there for over an hour and a half, just chilling with the kitties!

We haven't been inside yet but did peak inside the window about a month ago. The room where the cats are is pretty spacious. There were people playing with some of the cats with cat toys and then there were other cats that were sleeping. I saw one woman that had a cat sleeping on her lap. The cafe is "kitty corner" from Archie McPhee. DS wants to go for his birthday so we will make a reservation to go in May. Let us know how it goes on Friday.

It's a shame, I do like them! me too I did look to see if Nashville has one but they don't. There's a Facebook page trying to drum up interest for one though. Darn. My DS would looooove it. He's very gentle and cats gravitate to him. He'd love it.

Yes and no....
There is this place near Tybee Island, GA called The Crab Shack, if you aren't looking for it, you'd miss it because it us kind of out in the woods. It is not a cat cafe but....there are lots of cats! They are well behaved. They don't bother you but will lay at your feet and happily take scraps from you, most will let you pet them but a few are a little mor skidish.
We are getting a cat cafe in town. It is supposed to open in a few weeks...I can't wait!

Here in Tokyo, animal cafes are all over the place. I already have a cat so I wouldn't pay to sit in a room and play with cats. I took my DS to a bunny cafe once, but it was a tiny space and they only took one rabbit out of the cages at a time - presumably to stop them mating or fighting. There are also goat and owl cafes here, but I haven't been to them since the venues are usually tiny and I think it's exploitative. There's also a 'dog hire' place near my house where you can rent a dog and take it for a walk in the park nearby.

Yes, I've been to the one in San Diego. It was pretty fun. I took DD on another trip down there. Some cats were more interactive than others. We went on a weekday so it wasn't overly crowded. The cats could go to a back area if they got too overwhelmed. They've had close to 150 adoptions even though they haven't been open that long. Their coffee spot is next door but you can bring drinks into the cat area. It's pretty nice with art on the walls.

Yes! Last fall I was in Seoul and we were wandering around an area called Hongdae. I saw this sign up an alleyway with the word "FUCKFAKE" on it. I was intrigued and walked up and saw that below it was a sign for something called "Cats Living". Looked up at the second story window and saw a wicker chair with a big cat sitting on it and thought, "OMG, it's a cat cafe!"
DD and I went in and had some tea and played with cats. We took off our shoes and put on slipper type things in a little anteroom and then went in. There were probably 25 cats and it was like a large apartment living room/dining room. Most of the cats were pretty friendly but they had large mousehole type things in the wall that allowed them to come and go from the public area as they wished. My favorite cats were these medium size short hair ones that were just like any other short hair cat except their legs were like half the length of regular cats. They were like dachshund cats.
Sadly, we could not find FUCKFAKE to ascertain what that interesting establishment might have been.

Dd and I both really want a kitty, but dh is adamantly anti-cat. I am hoping this will give us our kitty fix. :-) My DH didn't grow up with pets. One day, I surprised him with a kitty from the shelter. They were inseparable. He rarely cries, but he sure did the day we had to say goodbye to his beloved. He now has her ashes, picture and paw print in a special spot in his closet. She was black/white and we now have another black/white cat that is the same towards him. If his bedroom door is closed without her inside, she will get on the nearby bookshelf and rattle the doorknob and meow loudly to be let in. When I lived at home, my mom said I couldn't have a cat. Well, I got one from a friend and put in a shoebox (with holes). I hid it in the nearby bushes. I pretended to be asleep and she left to run an errand. I then got the box and put it on the doorstep for her to find when she got home. It worked. We had that cat for a long time! I hope he comes around for you guys. I hope to always have a couple cats (we have 3 right now).

Love the story of how you got your mom to get a cat. That would just about need to happen got dh to agree to a cat. That or mice in the house.
We have had cats before and we have a dog now. But, we are on the cusp of being empty nesters. Dd graduates in two years and our doggie is 13. Logically I know that he is right and now isn't the time for a cat. But, emotionally is a different story! We also live in an area with coyotes and mountain lions. Kitty would need to be 100% indoors. We lost a kitty to a coyote when we lived in So Cal. That was horrific and I don't want to go through that again.
So...cat cafe it is.

Our kids are similar in age and when they ask for a new pet (we have 4 already, the 3 cats plus a dog), I think like that too. If we ever have to rent, getting a place to accept a mini zoo would be tough. Around here at least, you often have to not only pay a pet deposit, but pay extra rent too. I think that goes by a per pet charge. Ouch!

My only experience has been watching GIRLS! on HBO... one of the characters gets a job in a Japanese Cat Cafe... Though there does seem to be a little confusion over.... Cat vs the female body part that is often referred to as a nick name for a Cat!

So I did some research, and we are also getting a Cat Cafe as well. It will be opened by one one of the shelters in my area soon. I'd love to go, but the temptation to bring home other cats, when I already have two cats would be too high. But I am exited about other cats being given a chance to find homes, and for other people to be give a chance to come and interact with them as well.
