One of these was featured on Shark Tank--gal wanted to open one in Miami.
The thought of consuming food and drink in a cat place wigs me out...even though we do have a fur ball.
I wouldn't pay to pet her.

They recently discussed on local radio here in the Twin Cities, as we are getting one. Can't say I'm a big fan of cats, and I wonder how friendly most would be. I would love the concept with dogs.

I have not, but that's just because I have a cat and he annoys the heck out of me on my work from home days. He likes to be included in my phone meetings with a few well timed meows And he loves to lay on my keyboard while I'm trying to work, which is also why I get the well timed meows!

I love cats. We have three. And we volunteer at a shelter and spend hours in the cat rooms there. Having said that, I can't imagine eating or drinking among them. I don't like my cats anywhere near the kitchen when we're cooking or eating. Unless they purposely choose cats who won't try to drink from your drink or stick their noses in what you're trying to eat. But I guess if I couldn't ever be around kitties otherwise, I would suck it up to get a kitty fix.

That's a real thing?! I saw the episode of Girls, too, and thought it looked pretty cool. My family would love it! I became extremely allergic to cats during my first pregnancy, and was never able to live with a cat after that. Plus the fact that cats are coyote snacks in our neighborhood. We became dog people instead. So sadly, my kids never had a cat.

i can't imagine actually ordering food in a place that is full of cats...and their hair gina Meowtropolitan has the coffee area completely separate from the cat area. Imagine walking into a Starbucks and ordering your coffee and then, on the opposite of the room, there is a meeting room with a door. The cats are kept in the "meeting room" or if you have a Panera with a meeting room, it is like that. Definitely no cats curled up around the coffee or bakery treats! There are tables and seating in with the cats and you are able to bring your drinks in with you (from what I saw).

I doubt there are less stringent food-preparation health code rules for a place that allows pets. Plus, it wouldn't be safe for the cats if they just roamed around; you wouldn't want them to be able to bolt out the door of the restaurant right onto the street. ETA: I was really addressing Gina's comment about not ordering food where there were cats (and their hair) around; I didn't realize that part of it didn't stay when I used the quote feature.

I am sure you are right about health code rules. I should clarify that, from what I remember, the coffee area of Meowtropolitan is a nice size but the cat area is HUGE! Lots of room for the kitties to move about and play or nap. Hopefully, Cindy will be able to take some pictures and share them with us!

If so, what was it like. Were the kitties interested in interacting with you?
DD and I are going to one on Friday. Just wondering what to expect.
Seattle Meowtropolitan I haven't been to a Cat Cafe, but if the opportunity arose my daughter and I would definitely go! We do visit a local shelter a few times a month. It's a free roam shelter and you can stop by and visit with the cats (it's good to help socialize the more shy cats and to give attention to cats that want some loving). We already have two cats at home and aren't looking to adopt another, but we still have our favorites. At the shelter there are cats that come up to us (especially if we brought treats) and like to be pet. Others are shy at first, but with some patience like to be pet and some give some clear signals of stay away, lol. I imagine at a cat cafe there will be cats that are friendlier. Take pictures and report back!

Only if drinking coffee on my patio with my two cats counts! We saw the girl on Shark Tank and couldn't believe that was really a thing. I guess a good idea for the cats and people that can't own them. Strange concept to country kids that have had cats their entire lives!

Love the story of how you got your mom to get a cat. That would just about need to happen got dh to agree to a cat. That or mice in the house. We have had cats before and we have a dog now. But, we are on the cusp of being empty nesters. Dd graduates in two years and our doggie is 13. Logically I know that he is right and now isn't the time for a cat. But, emotionally is a different story! We also live in an area with coyotes and mountain lions. Kitty would need to be 100% indoors. We lost a kitty to a coyote when we lived in So Cal. That was horrific and I don't want to go through that again. So...cat cafe it is. Do you have any local shelters nearby? I would check into it - might be a way to get your kitty fix. You can visit the cats and help socialize them. They might also need foster homes for cats - so you can take on a cat temporarily when it works out for you, but don't have the long term commitment. At our local shelter they put moms and kittens in foster homes initially. I've thought about the same thing as you - when we retire it would be difficult to have a cat, but I don't know what I would do without having one. I love our cats!

Food and animals - I gotta say no. Separately, yes. I'm just wondering how many cats are terrorized by kids who aren't well behaved and would chase them, etc. I'd rather see them where the unruly can't get to them because their parents are useless. And what if the cats bite? Some cats are good for a few seconds of rubbing and then claw and grab with their teeth. Not in a mean way, it's just the way some are. I just don't think this is a good idea.

what's the cat hair situation even like in a place that serves food too?

I am not sure they offer food, drinks yes. And, as others have said the areas are separate. There is a minimum age limit, so no young kids to terrorize the cats. They have a maximum number of slots for every hour, so it doesn't get too crowded.
I'll definitely take pictures and report back. We have a local rescue that dd and I have been talking about volunteering at. We just need to schedule a visit.

I would love to go to one but it would be very hard for me to not hold/pick up a kitty. Pure torture!

It was hard to not pick them up. If they come and walk over to your lap when you are sitting, you can hold them though.

Thanks for the pictures; those kitties have an awesome space for hanging out! I think I'd probably break the 'no picking up the kitties' rule in less than 5 minutes, lol! Hopefully lots of them get adopted, or at least it raises awareness of kitties needing adoption.

I'm not a cat person but I sure would love to go to a puppy cafe. Problem is I'd want to adopt them all.
