So I bought this phone yesterday. Messed around with it getting used to it. Went to bed. Woke up to it being at 20% and needing to charge so it could update. Charged it for as long as I could before we left the house. Left the house it was at 60%. Came home 8 hours later it was at 10%. I took some photos (we went to the beach), sent one text and received two phone calls from some 800 number looking for someone else. I haven't used or downloaded any apps, I did change the wallpaper and checked the weather.
Does this sound like a normal thing for this phone? Because if I'm going to have to charge it daily I'm going to return it (and pay the restocking fee...) and buy something else.
I think my flip phone that fit in my pocket and lasted a week and a half on one charge was underappreciated...

I don't have a Samsung, but with my iPhone, if I start the day at 60%, then yes, 8 hours later I could be down to 10%. I can go almost 2 days without recharging, but that is if I do the bare minimum with my phone. On average, I recharge my phone once a day. Smart phones eat up a lot of power. There are apps that run in the background. You may have to see what you can turn off to save power. You won't get the battery life on a smartphone that you do with a flip phone.
ETA - I don't know about Samsung, but see if you can check your battery usage. On the iPhone you can see what percentage of the battery all your apps are using.

I just traded my Galaxy 5 for galaxy 7 edge. I most definitely had to charge mine every day, sometimes more than once. I am a heavy phone user but it was on the charger if it wasn't in my hands.

Mine charges pretty fast. 20 to 30 minutes to fully charge.
It can drain pretty quickly now, but not as fast as you describe

Most smart phones need to be charged daily. If you use it often possibility mid-day too. I keep my GPS turned off and if I know I will be some where with out wifi for a long period of time I will turn that off too to save battery.
I am a heavy phone user and must charge mid day. I carry an extra battery charger in my purse at all times. My Samsung S6 came with a quick charge cable. I think I can get a full charge in an hour or so (maybe less if it it turned off). We always plug in our phones at night. We both have a phone cord next to our bed side. We also have one near our couch, a wireless charger on the kitchen counter and a regular charger near my computer. I have gotten cheap ones at Tuesday Morning. Longer the cord the better.

I think I have the same phone (so not into phones, so not sure the exact one I have!). I have not been happy with it at all. Even my teens say that the iphone is so much easier. I think my phone may just be a "lemon". The pictures I take are all blurry and they were fine with my older samsung. The battery does drain fast. Sometimes it seems that I hardly use the phone and the battery goes fast.
But I am no phone expert!

Yes, my S5 would drain very quickly at times. My S6 is slightly better. Check and make sure you don't have any apps running in the background. Turning off notifications like from Facebook. If you google, you'll find some articles on how to save battery life.
Maryland, Dh had the same issue with his phone. Since I had the same phone, and pretty much no issue, I knew something had to be wrong. He figured out on Sunday that there was setting not right or something, and that fixed it. Not sure what it was, but you maybe able to play around with it and get it clearer.

I do have the 5s also. And what others say, it depends on what you have running and how often you use it. If I turn data off and Wi-Fi off, my battery will be good for a few days. I have gone all weekend without having to charge. But once you start checking Facebook, Google things, listen to Pandora or other stations, play games, that battery will drain quick. While I am at work, I usually stream music so I charge my phone while listening. Once it's at 100% I may or may not unplug it.

Also with the S5, make sure you are using a fast charger cord and not the regular. The fast charger has two "prongs" while the regular one looks like a regular charger cord.
I just got a backplate that converted it to wireless charging and rested it on the wireless charger when I wasn't using it.

I charge my Galaxy S5 once a day. If I am using it heavily, I might have to charge it in the middle of the day, but that is not the norm. I would say there is a problem with the battery or with processes running in the background. Take it to the store and ask them to look at it

Mine charges pretty fast. 20 to 30 minutes to fully charge. It can drain pretty quickly now, but not as fast as you describe That has been my experience as well. I do have to charge it every couple of days or so. It is now just part of my habit to plug it in before I go to bed every night. I'm not a heavy phone user but a lot of apps will run in the background and run down your phone. You can go into settings and see what apps are sucking the most juice. Having location enabled and wifi set to constantly scan for open wifi will run it down quickly, those are the first things I turn off when my battery is low. I also have advanced task killer and will kill running apps with it a few times a day. I don't think I've ever had a smart phone that would hold a charge like my old Nokia or flip phones. But to be fair, smartphones do so much more.

I have one, and yeah...I have to charge it pretty much every day. Sometimes it charges quickly, other times? Not. I wish I had never bought this phone. It's through Sprint and I have a 2-year plan. One more year to go and getting rid of them.

I've had my S5 for about a year and I love it. I charge it at night, and I might have to charge it once during the day if I'm using it a lot (and I do use it a lot, browsing the internet). I keep it on power-saving mode (not the ultra power saver, which is gray scale, I only use that one if I'm camping). Turn off the Wi-Fi if you're not at home and won't be using the internet, otherwise it's constantly searching for a signal and that wears the battery down. I don't turn it off for brief trips to the store, etc, mind you, but at work it's confused and wants to try to find a billion changing Wi-Fi spots so I turn that off. You might want to turn off location, too. Any Keep the screen brightness turned down when you can--that's a big battery killer. Any apps that use your location and update frequently need to be turned off, such as the Weather Channel with the temp display. FB doesn't update as frequently so that's not an issue. As far as any trouble with pics maryland check your settings and make sure your lens is clean, my camera takes really nice pics.

And yes, it's normal to have to charge a smart phone daily. Just plug it in at night when you go to bed.
As far as how fast it drained during the day at the beach, that's not normal, but I bet it kept searching for a Wi-Fi signal. Turning that off and just using 4G or turning data off altogether except when you need it will help a lot.

Turn wi-fi and location off! Those kill the battery faster than anything else. With those 2 off, mine will hold a charge with heavy use for a day and a half. Although, like other posters, I charge mine every night when i go to bed.

The S5 is known for having battery draining issues. I had one and passed it down to ODS when DH bought me a Galaxy Note 5 for my birthday. If you Google Galaxy S5 battery saving tips or similar, you'll get all kinds of things to pop up for you. One of the best battery savers I found was turning off the auto-brightness feature in the settings. Uncheck the box for "Auto" and set the brightness at a comfortable level for you. It does help with the drain. Also, there is a battery saving feature on your phone. If you ever find yourself out and about with a low battery, turn it on. On the Note, it's called "Ultra Power Saving Mode". It gives you a grayscale theme to your home screen and limits the number of usable apps, turns off wi-fi and bluetooth (another big batter sucker). It will turn off a lot of the smart features of your phone, but conserve the battery for emergency features until you can get it to a charger. The double pronged charger mentioned by someone else is key for a fast charge. The phone will charge with a single prong, but it will take much longer.

I recently got rid of my S5, but before I got rid of it, I was having to charge it constantly. If I was in the car, it was plugged into a car charger. At home, I had it plugged in a lot. The battery would last about 3 hours. It got really annoying. When I first got the phone, I needed to charge it about once a day.
