Our trip is shaping up! I got our tickets for Hamilton, got the plane tickets booked, and we are doing an AirBnB instead of a hotel. I looked all over (Navy Lodge on Staten Island was booked for our weekend, dammit) and finally decided on a whole apartment rental across the river in New Jersey. Weehawken, of all places and it turns out the apartment is only a few blocks from the site of the duel. It's fate! The apartment is lovely and public transport can get us to Times Square in less than 15 minutes 24/7. I'm really jazzed about that. There are four of us and it will be nice to have some room to spread out instead of cramming all of us into one hotel room. My kids will even have the option of not sharing a bedroom if they don't want to as the couch folds out. I looked up where our seats will be and they look really good. We'll be exactly this far back, on the aisle just like the picture shows, but on the left instead of the right so this is a flipped image of where we'll be sitting. I literally can't even. I am just hoping LMM's laryngitis gets better before our show. Get well soon, dude! The last time I was this excited about a vacation was when I was 30 and went to Disneyland for the first time. I feel utterly silly to be this excited but I can't help myself.

Excited for you!! And orchestra seats too!!!! I am certain I paid much less for my seats as they are up in the rear mezzanine. And we aren't going until June 8 (tickets bought in September) It sounds like you are coming here soon as you are worried about Lin's laryngitis. Oy! The apartment sounds perfect too. Enjoy!

There really aren't any cheap tickets to this show unless you win the lottery! Doesn't matter where you're sitting. We got a pretty good deal on our tickets, all things considered. They were expensive but we paid less than I planned for. Now I just have to wrestle with my son's grade school. He's going to miss three days for this trip and his teacher has been grumbling about it. I don't like to pull the cancer card but if I have to, I'll march my bald head right up there and tell them to pound sand. I don't think I'll have to though; they have been pretty understanding about things this year and I hope we can work out how to get his schoolwork done and turned in without it becoming a battle. I know that there is a big divide pea-wise over whether it's ever ok to pull kids out of school for a vacation but I'm perfectly ok saying I think it's fine right out loud. After all, I'm an admitted foot-flusher so I am accustomed to taking the heat. *snort*

I think that if the teacher doesn't like this, she going to have the opportunity to be more flexible. From a teacher's perspective, missing what happens and how material is presented is hard to plan for and predict. But, this is a beneficial learning event, not to mention a chance for kids ( in your ds's class) to learn empathy. Play the cancer card if you have to, and have a great trip!!

Um. You left out the best part of your trip.
You're meeting me.
I'm sure it was just an oversight on your part. You forget yourself.

I'm still excited for you with this trip. Good plan on the AirBnb, and yes getting into city with trains is a breeze...plus you can probably get some groceries and not spend a fortune on food! I'm in the life is for living camp and if you miss a couple days of school who cares. My parents pulled me out from time to time for trips and other fun events and it's some of the best memories I have. I always did my work and never missed a beat. At the end of the day you have memories with your family which is priceless. As I get older & my parents do too, I am more & more thankful for those times.

Virginia, I am so very happy that your trip is shaping up to be so very special! I personally wouldn't worry at all about your son missing a few days of school. Not at all!
Our dd was very seriously ill and unable to attend school in her 8th grade year, from mid-November until the very end of the school year. By April she had a home hospital teacher come for an hour M-F around physical therapy and other appointments. She couldn't read, but needed to be read to, and they discussed some things. I told dd all along that if the school dared to consider not allowing her to go on to high school the following year I would go to Sacramento and take it up with the governor himself! No way was that going to happen!
She wasn't fully healthy until senior year of high school and ended up a National Merit Finalist. So yeah, no biggie on three days of elementary school!
Have a blast and do tell us all about it when you can! xoxo

I am so excited for you!! (and a wee bit jealous - HAMILTON!) And FWIW, tell the teacher to deal with it. Its three days. I promise - your son will learn more on this trip than he ever would in three days in school. Go, relax and enjoy!

Your AirBnB plan sounds great. We stayed at the Navy Lodge on Staten Island last summer. While it was economical and very nice, it was a long trip to the main sites of Manhattan. It was a 15 min. bus ride to the ferry, up to 30 min. wait for the ferry, 25 min. ferry ride, then a subway ride (or two) from the tip of the island to wherever we wanted to go.
Have fun!

My niece used her birthday money and stood in the cancelation line for 12 1/2 hours and got a ticket to see Hamilton. Said it was the best birthday ever.
Have a fantastic trip and if you need someone to hold your pearls while you deal with a teacher, I'm there.

I hope Lin's voice is better but I hear Javier Munoz is the sexy Alexander Hamilton.... we go in Dec, and its the 24th a matinee.. so we are already resigning ourselves to the fact that LMM and others wont be in the show.. but the understudies and swings are supposed to be excellent!! When I read Weehawken I got excited!!! As for school... Hamilton could not be more educational... I would ask if your son could write something about Hamilton or Burr... it is totally an educational experience. I'm so excited for you... can I ask what row you are in? We are in Q not sure how far back that really is.. but I don't care~~ Enjoy!!!!

When we went to NY, we stayed in NJ & used the bus everyday. I was impressed at how often it came & how easy it was to use.
Have an amazing trip!

Go ahead and pull that cancer card! Sometimes, you just have to use it. It once got me a Kitchen Aide mixer (thank you Martha Stewart).
I admit I've taken to entering the digital lottery a few days each week. I can get there in about an hour if I have to. Dd would kill me, so I would just have to only tell you guys if I win! LOL!

That's good news we are preparing for the worst.... so whatever will be a pleasant surprise. Last summer we had quite the shock with Sidney Lucas was not performing in Fun Home. I hadn't event thought to check. Her understudy who is now in the role was amazing but my poor girl was devastated. Anyone who is cast at this point will be amazing... we are so happy to have tickets.. and a free place to stay!
