She did a great job on the story and her comments to the naysayers, but the police asked the media to not report the murder. I'm sure they didn't expect a 9yr old to report on it, but she didn't need to criticize the media for abiding by the leo's request. Usually when the police don't want a crime reported in the news there's a good reason.

What makes me really sad about the criticism is that I think it is a lot more about sexism than it is about her young age. I have a hard time picturing a 9 year old boy getting the same criticism - you could hear it in the comments about "tea parties" and "dolls."
I guess she is being well-prepared for being an adult female journalist though. The shit they take versus men is unbelievable.

He would be "ambitious" and a "go-getter" and "going to make something of himself" and so on. I really doubt there would be "go play Minecraft." Did you watch the video? It was like the best/worst episode of Mean Tweets ever. She read people's comments - including profane ones (though the profanity is bleeped) - and OMG, what are people thinking directing these kinds of comments at a NINE YEAR OLD?! Be human. It's never right to be mean like that, but this especially. Gross. I hope just one person watches it and it gives them pause to think about who they are directing their comments at the next time.

"Residents of Selinsgrove publicly called my work trash and told me I should leave it to the professionals. Other people told me I should stick to tea parties and playing with dolls. Maybe that’s what the “professionals” were doing while I was working the scene, because they sure weren’t there. And for those of you who think I need to mind my place, I’ll make you a deal. You get off your computer and do something to stop all the crime going on in my town and I’ll stop reporting on it. Until then, I’m going to keep doing my job."

Usually when the police don't want a crime reported in the news there's a good reason. The First Amendment gives her - and any other media - the right to report. The police don't control the press. Agreed she has the right to report it, but understanding how crimes are investigated/what effect information made pubic can have on a case is relevant... Like it or not, there is a relationship between the press and authorities... The press can do what they like but working alongside an agency while still maintaining journalistic independence and integrity is a skill that the best journalists have... I love her tenacity and boldness, and think that with more experience she'll be able to easily master the subtleties of not alienating major future sources... The police will likely not be as open or off the record with her as they would be with others... I also think of the families that have found out about loved ones dying from the media, and about the effects the stigma a murder/murderer in a family might have... Depending on the situation, I'm thinking if children would be effected, allowing a case to be handled relatively quietly and out of the press may be more of an ethical/moral choice than a journalistic one...
