I am hoping to lower our data package with our cell phone plan. We were at 40 but can easily go to 30. I will be using more with my new job (can listen to wireless headset sometimes and I like to listen to XM Radio). DD will be returning from college next month and will be using more than she was (it was minimal) too. I hope to eventually go down to 20 meaning there would be 5 gigs for each of us if we split it evenly.
Does 5 seem reasonable? DH uses some for geocaching on the weekends too but hopefully 5 should be good.

I have a family of 5 sharing 10. BUT we are around wifi at our jobs, homes, apt and on campus for our youngest at school. Once he gets home in a month, he will still have the home wifi. It has been rare that we got close to our cap. We just had it happen a month or so ago and it was due to DD's starting to breakdown and just drip wifi connections.

3 of us share 15, so we each get 5. Normally dd is the only one that reaches her max.

Wow that's a lot of data! We have 10 and often have to be careful the last couple days of the month but I refuse to increase it again because that's insane. Ds14 usually uses at least half of it, dh and I typically use less than2 each.

Two of us share 12 GB between 4 devices. It works. There are months - like when we are on vacation or go to the beach for a couple weekends - that it gets tight, but most months it's just fine. I think 5 GB/person is fine, but I would keep an eye on kids' usage; they are used to having more and when there are suddenly limits, it could get a little dicey at first.

Try having that as your home data! I have satellite internet, and 10GB is our data cap at home (not phones - our home internet).
That means no streaming of anything. It sucks.

2 of us share 3 - although AT&T just doubled it to 6 for unknown reasons. My daughter uses almost none. She is always on wifi. I think she averages less than .3 I am around 1 most months. I should probably look at downgrading, but we'll be adding my son soon, so it'll probably work out.

We have 'all-you-can-eat' data plans with our phones, and it's just as well. I was trying to reduce the cost of DS's contract, but he uses an average of 18gb a month, so I kept the existing one. DD uses about 10gb every month, and I use maybe 1.5-2gb. DH has just had his all-you-can-eat plan withdrawn by the phone company, as he uses about 70gb a month! He doesnt have broadband in his flat, so he uses his phone to tether his laptop, and streams music and movies every night. He's just going to have to grit his teeth and sign up for a month-to-month broadband contract.

20 GB was not quite enough for our family of four. We have 40 GB and it's too much, but there was some kind of deal so we're only paying what we paid for 20, and we don't get that text every month telling us we're almost out of data ...

We were hitting our 15GB limit on a regular basis the last few months - $15/GB gets pricy if you're still more than a few days from the next contract month! That was for 3 phones, a tablet and a standalone hotspot. My 2 kids were using probably 80% of it. Fortunately, AT&T started the unlimited (which isn't truly unlimited, but for all practical aspects it is - 22GB per device, but the hotspot has a separate 5GB limit). When I had them run the numbers, I saved $5/month (which actually saved me more since I kept hitting limits and having to pay per gig over). It's been nice to not get those texts.

We have my husband on it too, so it's 4 of us. But it will soon be 5 because we are getting our 13 yr. old a cell phone today. We have 15 a month. It's so expensive, I can't imagine us adding to it. I don't use my phone much at all, and my husband usually just uses his when he has wi-fi (work and home). The kids use it at school too, but I think they get wi-fi there because they can uses their phones for school stuff.

That's a great deal! I am clueless about this stuff, and my husband hates buying phones/phone plans (he says buying a car is much easier and quicker). So we never find good deals like yours!

We got a phone for DS through AT&T insurance. I didn't know they give you refurbished phones. It wouldn't stay on the home Wifi and he went through data like crazy before I realized what was happening.

We have 6, use 3 maybe. Lots of WiFi. The only time we came close to our limit is when we spent a week in the UP.
Wifi is our friend.

I think we would all go crazy. DH can survive in a shack as long as he has Wifi! He watches Netflix a lot and then loves Words With Friends on his phone as well as going online with his computer.

Our family of 4 (2adults 1 college freshman and a 17 yo ) we share 8 gigs per month last month we used 99% of it too.
When I was using my phone as a GPS daily all day for work, we kept going over so they got me a GPS with lifetime updates for the holidays and we've been fine except slightly tight last month.

We have 15GB and we are able to roll-over anywhere from 5GB to 7GB each month as long as I am not traveling. I have trained my girls to be watchful on when they are using wireless versus cellular data. The only time we seem to run out is during our annual trip to the beach. The road trip is 5 hours and they like to listen to Spotify or watch YouTube.

We use wifi as much as possible. The only time we ever even went over 10 (used 11) was up north in the woods for four days w no wifi). The only reason we have 20 is because att upgraded all the family 10 plans to 15 then last time I called in for something they offered to upgrade us from 15 to 20 at the 15 rate. They also have 1 month rollover so I doubt we will ever go over.

Myself and 2 sons share 5 gigs and most months we don't even use 2 of those 5. I have thought of lowering it however I don't because occasionally like this month my 20 yr old goes over the amount allotted. The reason he goes over is he sometimes streams you tube when not on WiFi ie while we are in the car it frustrates me but he will be paying the overage.

There's 5 of us, 3 adults and two teens and we share 11. The three adults use less than 3. We've only gone over if we are on vacation and not by wifi enough. Kids have wifi at school and home and most friends houses. They know not to stream if not on wifi. I usually just check email, FB, two peas, GPS, look up stuff periodically. Even on vacation I usually use less than a GB over a week with no wifi.

5 of us share 6 gigs and we never go over and rarely come close. I just checked and our cycle ends tomorrow and we've only used 3.57.

We have 15 between 4 of Dh and I DD-16 and Ds -12. Ds is the biggest user. We get pretty close to the limit especially when we are travelling for hockey and spending hours in the car. If the kids go over they pay.

Holy crap!!! What do you guys PAY for your cellphone plans??!! I live in the boonies, and we only have 2Gs between the 3 of us, and we don't get close. Plus the left over rolls over. We basically use Wi-Fi wherever we can, and if we don't have it, we don't use our phones much. I guess I feel that spending that much money on something like that is not worth it. I would just assume stream online on my computer and use our data plan from home, or listen to the radio.

we're on T-mobile so I have no clue how much we're all using. We've got 10 gigs each and the only one who has ever come close to using it all is the 17 year old while on a band trip (he was streaming movies before T-mobile had the free streaming for video.) With free video streaming and free music streaming, there isn't much left that actually takes that much data.

We have 6 for 2 phones and an ipad. This month we had to increase to 12 because we didn't watch it closely enough on the ipad and turn it off. Games and video used up so much. We'll go back to 6. My dh and I barely use 2 each.

Kids have 5gig (unlimited but throttle down after 5). DS loves you tube and blows through his data in about 3 weeks. DD 2 gets to the end of the month or runs out with a couple days to go. DD 1 hardly uses any.
I think if you're careful, then you could get by on 5.

We had 10g for 4 people and ATT just gave us an additional 5g/month for no extra charge. We generally roll over 2-3000 each month. We're all around wifi much of the day.
