Holy crap!!! What do you guys PAY for your cellphone plans??!! I live in the boonies, and we only have 2Gs between the 3 of us, and we don't get close. Plus the left over rolls over. We basically use Wi-Fi wherever we can, and if we don't have it, we don't use our phones much. I guess I feel that spending that much money on something like that is not worth it. I would just assume stream online on my computer and use our data plan from home, or listen to the radio. I'm not going to directly answer, but it's not a small amount. We're a very connected family though and are all always running around. I use the hotspot for streaming broadcasts when we're doing a show where the wifi isn't stable enough (but it's only 128Kbps so it's not all that bad - that's why the hotspot has 5GB but could probably get away with less). In addition, I'm usually monitoring the broadcast during live shows on my phone via TuneIn, and I listen when I'm in the car when I can (gotta drink the KoolAid, so to speak, if you're wanting people to listen). I whine more about my UVerse bill than I do my AT&T Wireless bill. Airwave radio in Houston is a lot of the same old crap - ClearChannel or CBS or whatever other big guns. We have two decent stations that I listen to, and they're both low-power - KPFT (listener-sponsored) and KACC (run by one of the local JuCos). It's sad. We used to have a lot more variety. That's why we started our own internet station.

Kids have 5gig (unlimited but throttle down after 5). DS loves you tube and blows through his data in about 3 weeks. DD 2 gets to the end of the month or runs out with a couple days to go. DD 1 hardly uses any. I think if you're careful, then you could get by on 5. I was using less than 5GB with 3 devices, so yes it can be done if you're careful about keeping apps running and using WiFi whenever available.

I think you should be fine with 5 each if your kids don't watch too much Netflix or YouTube.

It is cheap, but the coverage can be spotty.

Full disclosure: We use so much data because the school wi-fi that three of us have access to most of the day blocks a lot of sites/apps that we like using.

We have 10 gigs for 4 people and the kids are blocked after 2 gigs. There is no reason for more, they have access to wifi at home, school and in our car. If the wifi in our car isn't renewed (we are still debating that) we will give the kids more.

We have 3 gigs for 3 phones - two teenagers and myself.
I have the Family Limits set so that I get .5 and the teens each get 1.25.
Though my kids might disagree, I think it's plenty. The only reason we gave the kids any data access was for use when they're out driving (maps, searching for a gas station, etc.). They have wifi at home and school. I don't think you need to be watching movies or videos every second of the day. It also forces them to read books on long car trips. If they had lots of data, that wouldn't happen.

I've no idea about my girls - they are on their own phone/payment plan now.
I have 300MB on my phone, DS and DH have data blocked (DH was accidentally turning stuff on and incurring charges, so we blocked it from the provider side). I try to use Wifi mostly with my phone - I only leave data on for messaging and my BBM app.
I find I use more when we are at a basketball tournament all weekend and I'm using Facebook and posting photos. But for the most part, the 300MB does me just fine.

Wow, that's a lot of data. I only have 500 MB and I don't think I ever even got close to using a 1/5 of that in a month.

There are 4 of us with 4 gig (with a bonus gig for the rest of the year). We have only gotten 2 notices that we had used 75% of the data of the 4 gig on the very last day of the contract month, so basically we had the 25% left plus the whole bonus gig left. My girls know that they have to have their phones set to wifi wherever they can because once their data is up, they are blocked out of data, so they are quite frugal with it. No streaming Pandora unless they are at home, no watching movies in the car on data, etc. Otherwise, they wouldn't be having smart phones. The bill gets just too expensive.
