Just wanted to share something I made for my friend's mom. She has lung cancer and dementia. She recently fell in the bathroom of her care home and broke her coccyx. While she was in hospital after surgery, she was trying to get out of bed and it was difficult for the nurses to keep her still as she can no longer read or watch tv. I did a bit of googling and I discovered 'fidget' quilts which are very similar to busy blankets for babies with different textures and colors to keep their hands and minds occupied. My friend and her mom are Japanese. She loves bright colors and used to work at a sushi restaurant. so I included sushi fabric to jog her memory. The quilt is quite small to fit on her lap and includes a fabric teddy and furry tail (removable for washing), plastic springs, wooden beads on elastic, satin ribbons, buttons, a zippered pocket, a buckle, fluffy bow, etc. Apparently she loves it and the nurses are able to keep her in bed or wheelchair for longer periods until she recovers:) I posted the photo on FB and my friend wants one for her senile mom too! Great for using scraps and only took a couple of hours:) BTW, the edges are straight, it just looks wonky as I didn't lay it flat on the table!!

That's awesome!! You know, you truly could sell those on etsy. I work with geriatric and often demented/confused patients, and if I had a source, I would totally recommend them (to you)! We have something similar for inpatients. We call them "busy aprons". They have a variety of things, buttons, snaps, zippers. I like yours better though . That was so sweet of you to make for her!

These are a great idea. My MIL is in a memory care unit at a nursing home and I see so many of the patients playing with the snaps and buttons on their clothing or rubbing the ends of their sleeves. I think it was give them some measure of comfort. Your quilt is beautiful!

That is awesome! When I read your thread title, I thought I don't see how that will work. I was picturing a dementia patient trying to quilt. I should check out Etsy. I wonder if my 7 year old with Autism might like these.

This is awesome! I have been looking for projects like this. I Googled Busy Aprons and found a multitude of resources. I am going to present this to my quilt group and maybe we just might make some of these.
