I just used Turbo Tax to file my son's who also just had a part time job. It was free to file both. You can check your states website to see who offers free filing. We are in IN.
ETA I just checked, H&R Block does free filing for IL. Google free Illinois tax filing.

I don't know if there is a state EZ, but the IL state forms are simple compared to federal for so little money. I use Turbotax for mine, but I think you can just go online and find the form. If he owes no fed, I think he will likely get state back.
Eta. Love turbotax

Thank you. How did you like Turbo Tax? I am doing our taxes this year, since nothing has changed for us year over year. I did them by hand first, and will be filing electronically this weekend. There are a few other free options to use on the website, but I haven't heard of most of the other software packages. Turbo Tax was incredibly easy, it took me less than 10 minutes to file both. DH and I aren't using it for ours though because we have a business, we use a CPA (who probably uses something like Turbo Tax, lol)Is your son getting a refund? Mine made right around $1000 and he is getting a small refund from both.

When you go to exit, it will ask you if you want to save the return.

It will save. It takes me a few short sessions to do our taxes. I don't want to make mistakes and I hate them so it quickly gets overwhelming.
