Ugh. We had our new mattress delivered yesterday. We'd been sleeping on the pull out bed for a week and I was so excited to get the new mattress. We upgraded to a king. I picked the firmest mattress I could find because I hate sinking into a bed. Well, DH is upstairs sleeping like a baby and I'm on the sofa because I couldn't stand the new bed. DH had bought sheets that weren't as nice as our last ones - so I don't know if I was unhappy with the mattress or the sheets, or the mattress pad i bought yesterday - maybe it was too cushy. How do I narrow down what the problem is because I can't go through so many sleepless nights. I feel like I need a good massage after sleeping on the pull out bed in our den for a week so I'm already in poor form. I did like the size of the mattress. And I didn't feel DH move at all, which was amazing. But something bothered me. Has anyone ever had this happen. I feel like a complainer but I need to find out what the problem is! UPDATE: the new sheets were dreamy last night . And I think they'll just get better the more times they are washed. I know better than to send dh for sheets next time. Although he tried hard - he thought the higher thread count would be better. We also spent an arm and a leg for a particular mattress pad. It was way better than the original one I purchased. Unfortunately, worth every penny .

It could just be that you need to get used to it. They say it takes 30 nights to get used to a new mattress.
But low quality sheets might be a problem. I'd try nicer sheets before I gave up on the mattress.

What kind of mattress is it? How different is it from your old one (other than size)?
When we switched mattresses, it took me a couple of nights. DH complained for about 3 weeks. So Merge is correct. Allow time for a change. I also think that your choice of sheets is a good idea. I'm particular about the finish and fiber count on my sheets, so they could also be the culprit.

And I'm terrible with change. I wonder if I should sleep on the mattress with just a duvet to make sure I like the mattress.
These new sheets are 800 thread count Egyptian cotton. I have no idea what our queen size sheets are but they are far softer and thinner feeling. More soft where these new ones feel thicker and have a sheen to them.

It's a change. Give it a few days. We returned a mattress after a week because I was unhappy with it. Furniture store didn't bat an eye. Love my new one.

It's a name brand mattress. We went slightly lower than highest quality because I preferred firmer with no pillow top to the firm with slight pillow top of the highest quality (at this Dept store). I wanted a king bed so badly. But I found it a bit harder to make the bed. I'm so terrible with change. I figure I'll get used to it but want to make sure it's good and not just that I'm getting used to it.

We just bought a bed yesterday, and I too worry about the change. Stay with it. Maybe wash those sheets a few more times. Annette

When we got a new mattress set about 8 years ago, a blissful King size, it felt like I was sleeping on a bed that had a bunch of unfolded clothes tossed on it. It was hard to explain but it definitely seemed lumpy compared to our old mattress. It took me months to get used to that feeling and really a year or more to be comfortable in our bed. I had slept on the old mattress at least 10 years. Change is hard sometimes.

I'd start with the sheets since that is an easy change. Go buy some new ones that you like. Even if you end up hating the mattress and returning it, you'll likely get another king so replace the sheets and see if that helps.

Yes, we bought a new mattress last year. I still can't stand it. Hubby loves it. So, I added a foam topper to my side. We have a huge lump in the middle now where it goes from his "flat" side to my "foam" side but I can now sleep. I could never get used to the new mattress.

More soft where these new ones feel thicker and have a sheen to them. We got a new mattress on Thursday this week. So far I like the mattress itself, but I'm not convinced on the sheets. I also purchased 800 ct, nice if price says anything about them, sheets and I don't love them for the same reason. They feel too thick and I really hate the polyestery kind of silkiness. It kind of grosses me out. I really like more of a percale. And can we talk about how stinking expensive bedding is?! Holy smokes. I hadn't replaced the master bedroom bedding other than a new duvet or inexpensive sheets in quite a while. The kids last several sets I purchased from Pottery Barn and thought they were basically middle of the road to the slightly higher end. Uh...no. I had some sticker shock when I had to buy everything at once...pillows, mattress pad, duvet, comforter...

That's why I don't want to buy a new mattress - they are so expensive, and I worry that I won't like it. It takes me a while to get used to new things! My husband wants a king and our bedroom could fit one, but he has so much furniture in there, it would look really cluttered. And he wouldn't want my suggestions for making it look less cluttered!

It's nice to know I'm not the only one who has gone through this, but I feel like I'm driving DH crazy and I really don't want to. The bed / bedding / new furniture was so expensive that I don't want to be a downer - in trying to focus on all of the positives - love the furniture, the bed didn't creak last night, the size is great, we can move independently - but I don't want to brush aside being uncomfortable. And truly I don't want to just be ok with it.

Talking with DH, I think the mattress felt heavy for me. There was no spring. Our old mattress was springy but firm. DH says they call it isolation - so that when one person moves the other person doesn't feel it - Which is something we wanted. But does that make the mattress feel - heavy. I couldn't easily move around. I felt like I had to lug myself around whereas in my old bed I bounced around when I turned over. It felt easier to move.

UGH. I'm sorry. I *JUST* bought a new mattress set. My current one is like 9 years old and is caved in the middle at this point. I've been having pains in my neck, back, and shoulders and today I decided I'd had enough.
I'm sorry. I hope you get used to your mattress soon. I hope I do as well.
For bedding, I always check out places like Gilt.com.

I'm like the flipping princess and the pea lately. I hate my mattress, the sheets aren't right, the pillow of the devil and it just all sucks. But none of it is new, this all just started for some unknown and annoying reason.

take everything off the mattress. put on a sheet that you like. even if it is a top sheet from your other bed. then sleep on it with your favorite blankets.
Then one at a time add the mattress pad under the sheet you like. Then add the new sheet your husband bought or buy new ones.
But you will need to sleep on it for at least 30 days.
I would have bought a sleep number. but I swear by them. and they are very firm if you fill them all the way. I can't sleep on anything but my sleep number because of my back. I am still dealing with extra pain in my back because of sleeping on crappy motel beds.
Good luck

800 thread count sheets are going to be heavy. To me, they feel like tablecloths and not sheets. Find some good quality cotton in the 300-350 TPSI range, and see if that helps. Peacock Alley sheets are really nice, soft, and light weight.

I'm currently resting in my new bed. I took off the sheets and it improved greatly. Then I took off the mattress pad and it improved even more. Now I'm just laying on the plain mattress with my duvet cover (my original - I didn't need a new one because we were using a king duvet on our queen bed) and I wish it was nighttime so I could go to bed. So comfortable. Happy with the mattress I think.
The only thing I'd say about it is that it isn't made of that shiny type fabric our old one was made of. Does that mean this is fancier? It is a softer fabric.

It might take more than a night to get used to it. You and hubby travel a fair bit and you know you have to sleep in a strange bed while you are away. Sometimes they are good and sometimes terrible. My son's father taught me an expression "makura kaete nemurenai" which applies to you. When you change your pillow you can't sleep. Well you changed the mattress so it's a doh you can't sleep - YET. Give it another night. Lay on the bed during the day today, too, to get used to it. I love a bed *exactly* as you described. I mean it's my dream bed. Don't give up!

I agree about the 800 thread count sheets. My fav is 400 count cotton. No sateen finish.
We upgraded to a king too the furniture came last week and the new mattress comes on Tuesday. I hope we like it. Dh did a lot of research and went with a Wink Bed, but you have to order them online. They give you 101 days to try it out risk free. I am still pretty nervous about it.

Yes, it could take up to a month to get used to the new bed especially if the old one was particularly bad. My favorite sheets have all been in the 400-500 thread count range. Finding great sheets at a decent price is hard to do. My last set I bought at Tuesday Morning for about $60 (king set) and they ended up being really nice.

I think we have had ours for three years and it is still too firm. I walk on it when I change the sheets to help soften it. We use to have a waveless waterbed for 25 years, so any mattress change would have been rough! I need to get a new foam topper to go on top of the foam topper we already have.

I bought a new bed and mattress in November. I wanted firm, and I got it. The salesman said it would feel extra firm when I first got it, but to give it some time. He was right. I wanted firm, but it was as hard as a rock and the first couple nights were weird. It reminds me of the beds in a lot of China hotels, they are extra hard.
He was right, it took a couple of weeks to "soften" though still firm, it is finally to my liking. Hopefully yours will as too and you can sleep as well as your DH.
Good luck!

We have had our mattress for several years and I do think it is about time to replace it. I am dreading it. I need something firm yet soft. I have fibromyalgia and want the softness for my pressure points BUT I have a bad back and need something to give support. DH is has RA and has his own set of sleeping requirements. I just don't see the picking out process going smoothly at all. I am almost thinking of getting 2 twin beds that meet the requirements of each of us and then slipping them together to make one big bed. Does this make me sound like Rob and Laura or Luci and Ricky of the way back when shows?!?!
For sheets I have found a set of Wamsutta at Bed Bath and Beyond. They are $59 or $69 and once I use a coupon they come out to $49. Perfect weight, they get softer with each washing and they feel cool in the summer. A BIG plus for me!

Sheets, like the Refupeas, get better with age. I think they get so much softer the more they are used.
I have found awesome 100% cotton sheets at Costco. I love them. They are not too slippery...I hate sateen sheets.

For a person who weighs more than I should, I have bony elbows. If sheets are not super smooth, they actually hurt when my elbows come in contact with them. So first thing I'd do is get a new set of really good sheets. If that doesn't work, get a different mattress pad. Hope it works out.

I'd grab the old flat sheet and pop it (at least), on your side of the bed for a few nights and see what that does... I also find it easier to sleep on a bed that's too firm so I'd start without the pad, and add pads as needed... Pads make me weirdly claustrophobic - not enough air flow, so consider trying different options that way too...
