I've unplugged it, but every time I plug it in, it just turns on automatically. Any ideas?
Background: It's a 12yo GE Profile and I cleaned it yesterday. After the cycle finished, I opened the door and left it open for two hours. Then I went to clean the white ash. I was cleaning and then leaned in to the element, which, unfortunately, was still too warm for my bare fingers. I let it go quickly, along with the small amount of water I had in a bowl that I was using to clean. It was maybe 6-8 oz max of water. 90% of it spilled on the door and the floor and I cleaned it up quickly. I closed the door.
Later I finished cleaning and turned on the oven and it shorted out. I reset the fuse and tried again a little while later. Same thing. I let it sit overnight and plugged it back in and went upstairs. It went on by itself!! I mean the knob that I turn to turn the oven on was off and I never touched it again.
Of course I've turned it on and off and unplugged and reset several times, but every time I plug it back in, it turns on. I really, really don't want to call an electrician. I don't have the money for that right now.
I wonder if I pulled out the element a bit, but it doesn't seem like that and I can't think why the oven would heat up of I did that. Does anyone have any thoughts about what it is or what I can do myself?
Thank you!

We had that happen while I was baking something. All of a sudden, it began beeping very loudly and went to an extremely high temperature and wouldn't turn off unless it was unplugged. We googled and found it was called a "Runaway Oven."
We ended up purchasing a new control panel and DH used YouTube to learn how replace it. We used RepairClinic.com for info and to order the parts.
Hope you can figure out the issue without hiring anyone.

Sounds to me like you fried the switch. I would call a repair place and talk to one of the repair people about what happened. They might be willing to give you a good idea of what may be wrong and how much it would cost to fix. Or if you could tackle the job yourself. Barring all that you could check Craigslist for a used range. I just looked at the listings for my area and saw a few nice looking ranges, newer than 12 years, for $75 and under.

We did. It freaked me out so much, we bought a new one. It was here from the previous owners so I'm not sure on the age of the oven.

I had a GE Profile oven in 2004. so it was 12 years ago. It too would not turn off. I think it's something with that oven. Since at that time it was brand new I called for a GE repair. The guy disconnected the oven and took it out then rewired it correctly. He said at that time it had been put in wrong could have burn my house down.

Not an oven, but a glass cook top. We had to flip the circuit breaker. I never used the cook top again and replaced it. It was really scary having that crazy hot element sitting out there to burn someone or even worse.

Yes I had to replace the control panel with my oven to fix this.

We had a Kenmore oven do this to us around 10 years ago. I googled but never found a solution so we bought a new oven and vowed never to shop at Sears again.
