I posted last week about the issues we'd been having with older DD and her moodiness, disrespect, etc. A frequent bone of contention has been her desire to have more spending money, but her lack of desire to do anything to earn more more money (even chores around the house).
Yesterday, the owner of a local bakery posted on an area FB group that they were looking for a teenager to work a few hours a week doing light cleaning, minding the counter as needed and doing some very simple prep work. I asked DD if she was interested, and she said yes. They were open this morning, so we helped her put together a simple resume, and DH drove her over there. She went in on her own, introduced herself and spent about 20 minutes interviewing with the owners. They hired her on a trial basis on the spot.
She is quite pleased with herself. They want her to work 4-6 hours on Saturday and one or two afternoons after school (or during the day, during the summer). Maybe 8-10 hours a week at most. It will be a minor inconvenience for us to have to pick her up in the evening or take her and pick her up on the weekend, but I think the lessons she learns about the value of work and how long it takes her to earn enough money for the things she wants will be invaluable.
We've already looked at the city bus schedule and figured out how she can easily take the bus from school to the bakery in the afternoon. It's a much longer and possibly scarier ride for her to take the bus all the way home after work, so we will pick her up as needed for now. She was thinking she could take an Uber home, but she's already figured out that it would take her an hour or more to earn enough to pay for the Uber.
She's been much better with her behavior this past week, and I think this step into the grownup world of responsibility will only improve things. She has a hefty class schedule planned for next year, so I don't know if the job will last past the summer, but such is the nature of teen employment. It goes without saying that her school work comes first.
Wish us luck!
