I let my dog outside for her evening "outing" and she got into an altercation with a skunk. OMG!!! My eyes were watering at the smell. Kept her outside while I ran to the store and bought Hydrogen peroxide and baking soda and rubber gloves and dh helped me wash her. But our house smells so bad I can't actually tell if I got it all off the dog. I need help. I can't go to work and dh most certainly can't either if we smell like skunk. So how do we tell if we smell? How do we get it out the house? My kids are in tears too because they also think they stink. I asked the pharmacist if I could also bathe in the peroxide mixture and he says "they didn't teach us that in pharmacy school" . Then I asked him if I smell (that was before I even went near the dog) and he blushed and said yes.

1. I'm so sorry! bTDT. 2. Take dog to petsmart tomorrow to the grooming salon for de-skunking. 3. While at Petsmart, buy Natures Miracle Skunk Formula. Douse everything.
Last time it happened, my boss sent me home from work. I lost my favorite long down coat. A lot of things were thrown out, because of that smell.
'The next time it happens, the dog doesn't set foot on the house until after it goes to the salon. It goes from yard to car, even if it means spending one night outside.
Nature's Miracle Skunk formula worked better than anything else on the carpet, drapes and dog, but it was a long process getting that stench out of the house.

Get a towel wet, wring it out, and whoop it around like a helicopter!!! It helps (at least I think it does) but I hate to tell you that our house smelled for almost 2 weeks (ugh). The second and third times we did have an air purifier in our house that cleaned the air rapidly. The first time it happen we were >< this close to going to a hotel for sleep!
The best thing is to take paper towels, wipe the dogs fur with those first and then shampoo in the mixture of peroxide, Dawn, and baking soda.

You can wash your hair with the mixture however peroxide could lighten your hair!!
You can wash clothing regularly and add a cup of white vinegar to rinse cycle--it actually makes your clothes smell fresh (we use that instead of perfumy fabric softeners)
I am a huge fan of the Natures Miracle products but I've never tried the skunk one!
Rinse out your nostrils too, a lot of the "smell" is in your nose hairs! If it is terrible, try putting some Vicks in your nostrils. (Firefighter trick)

Dawn dishwashing liquid for the dog and you.
You cannot miss the acrid smell of skunk.
Don't let your dog anywhere but the tub until you wash off the oil with Dawn.

Oh, no! Good luck with that. Ours has had encounters, too. Sucks. So bad. Even when he didn't get a direct hit it was awful.
And I was happy to have winter ending but now the thought of messy MUD and skunks...

Douche!! My sister swears this works the best.
And it has the fancy applicator that you can shoot the liquid at the dog from a distance.

Lemon grass oil diluted will also work. Our cat got skunked and my son washed him with diluted lemon grass oil and he didn't smell after his bath (I wasn't home when this occurred )

Thanks everyone. We washed her worth the peroxide mixture straight away and got most of it. She's at the groomer right now to get the rest hopefully.
The house absolutely stinks. Going to wash the walls and floor in the bathroom where she spent the rest of the night with vinegar.
As an aside the groomer didn't think I stink.
And apparently I butt dialed my BFF last night. She wanted to know if DH and I were having a sexy bath because we were talking about how warm to make the water and lotions and stuff. Lol. We were washing the dog.

I live in fear of this happening. Our neighborhood has a major skunk problem and a number of my friends dogs have gotten sprayed. We have a 175 lb newfoundland and I just cannot imagine what it will be like if he gets it. We do have the Natures Miracle Skunk stuff on hand.
Best of luck getting the small out of everything.

I did wash them outside in the baby pool. Nope..... And I've washed many of Skunky dog.... Online sources say people only think of this works because by time they wash the dog they become accustomed to the smell. I commercial products like nature's Pets say to avoid the face. What are they think dogs get sprayed!

One other thought. . . it was a long time ago but I had a dog that got sprayed. We bathed him in the tub, etc. The smell just lingered and lingered especially in the bathroom area even after thorough cleaning. I realized the shower curtain had absorbed the odor and that's where the scent remained. I tossed it and the smell finally dissipated.

And I personally don't think you ever get accustom to the smell. One time, the dog got in the house before we realized. After tom bath, dog was fine, inside smell not so much.

I know I'm too late for this time as you've already dealt with it. Our dog got skunked 3 years ago and it was miserable. In hindsight we should have gotten out scissors and cut his hair while he was still outside to get the worst of it off (while wearing gloves). That would have avoided spreading the oily mess over a larger area. Then treat with natures miracle skunk treatment.
What we did was towel him off with paper towels and then bathe. Didn't work. Tomato juice did nothing, lemon juice and baking soda didn't either. I read something that said not to use peroxide, so we didn't do that. Of course it was middle of the night and the store wasn't open, but we were there first thing in the morning for the natures miracle skunk stuff. That helped, but we did multiple treatments. Then took him to the groomer. He smelled ok after that, but for 2 full years, every time he got wet, he reeked of skunk. Despite grooming every 6 weeks or so. We are finally past it now 3 years later, and the neighbor took down the falling apart shed where the skunk seems to have been living, but I keep a bottle of de skunk stuff in the house just in case
I would not put a dog in the car with skunk oil on him. I'd be afraid you'd never get the smell out of the car, especially if he rubs up against something, which is likely if you're on your own transporting him. Good luck!!

Ours is a Newfie mix, so I hear you. The thick double coat. It took 2 years to get rid of the smell completely. If you know there are skunks in your neighborhood, I would suggest not letting him out in the yard at night. Walk him on a leash along a sidewalk or road at night instead. Inot disturbing a skunk is worth the hassle.
