Ethan Couch has been ordered to serve 4 consecutive 180 day sentences in the manslaughter deaths from the 2013 accident. From what I'm reading, it sounds like this new sentencing is because he has just turned 19 and is not related to his violating the previous probation restrictions. Is this right? From this LA Times article: Couch had always faced the prospect of adult jail time as part of his probation once his case had moved out of the juvenile system. Prosecutors didn’t ask the judge to declare Couch had violated his juvenile probation by fleeing to Mexico with his mother last year, or to consider it in his ruling.
The length and conditions of his probation after this time is served are still to be determined. Can he still face additional charges for fleeing to Mexico?

One would hope. I don't think therapy is going to work for this guy. He's never experienced consequences even after causing the death of multiple people. I can't see anything other than jail time giving him a wake up call. The sad part is, even that might not do it.

Yeah, I think he's a lost cause. I sure hope they go after him for fleeing. And hopefully his mother never sees the light of day again, either.
I can't get over an underage drunk driver killing four people and just walking away. Damn.

Two years for killing 4 people?! He never would have gone to jail at all had he not been caught drinking again?!

I heard snippets of this ruling yesterday and I was just as confused! It seems hard to believe that our system sentenced Martha Stewart to 5 mos in prison for a minor technicality and this kid only gets an additional month per life lost. Unbelievable.

From what I have read the new sentences are not related to the probation violation, so I'm questioning whether this jail time would have been added anyway when he turned 19 and is separate from any additional charges related to the probation violation/fleeing to Mexico.

That kid is disgusting, as are his parents and others involved in his defense. Don't get me started, to me drunk drivers are the worst people. I am probably in the minority about how I feel about drunk drivers, but that's just my opinion.

I thought the first sentencing of probation was a terrible miscarriage of justice and that the parents probably paid money for that light of a sentence. Is it standard for "juvenile to always faced the prospect of adult jail time as part of his probation once his case had moved out of the juvenile system"?

My husband used to be a deputy and he said this jail time is really going to suck. It's all in county, not state which means no gyms, no library, no educational programs, nothing but sitting around looking at a bunch of other county losers and fighting over PBS on the black and white. LOL.

In Texas you can be ordered to serve 180 days in jail as a term and condition of probation. Your probation is not revoked, you are still on probation but have to do jail time. You will continue on probation after you are released. This is actually a "good" outcome because the court will continue to monitor his behavior after he is released. Most defendants, when facing probation revocation, just want to do jail time and get it over with so when they are done with jail time they are done with their sentence. It is actually harder to stay on probation and stay out of jail. He can still be revoked later and do jail time.
Criminal justice in Texas can be confusing.

What annoys me even more is that one of his court ordered rehab programs was mostly paid for by the taxpayers. His parents said they were "financially unable to pay for treatment". Court documents showed that they said they could only afford $1,170/month....for a program costing over $20,000/month. Afluenza Teen

So, his time will be in solitary....so I don't think he gets TV even.

They were talking about the psychological effects of having to be in solitary for that long.

They were talking about the psychological effects of having to be in solitary for that long. That's not going to help when he is released into society. I also read that the judge is giving the defense a chance to argue the sentence and that the judge may change his sentence.
