My dd is finishing up her last semester at college at NYC and just got an internship for her senior year in Philadelphia. She has a small studio apartment in Brooklyn and it's furnished with mostly IKEA and Target furniture. She and her boyfriend will be moving in August, and I'm trying to figure out how we can help them. What do people typically do when they don't have their own transportation/truck, or friends with muscles? Are moving companies for those with houses full of furniture? Should they rent a UHaul? They are on the 7th floor of their apartment now, and they have a tiny elevator. They have a kitchen table, some carts, lamps, bookshelves, and small tables, a sofa, two chairs, a bed, and probably a dozen boxes of clothes/misc. I'm sure it would all fit in a UHaul, but I have little confidence in their ability to schlep it all down the stairs into a truck that is parked several blocks away because of their limited parking. My DH and I are dealing with tight schedules, but we may be able to fly in to help them over a weekend, but I wanted to see if anyone knows of another option. The few moving companies I've seen online are estimating $2500 to get them from Brooklyn to Philly. For that, I could pay for airfare, meals, and a few nights at a nice hotel for the weekend, so I want to make sure there aren't any other options. Opinions?

You lost me at schlepping things a few blocks. What if it's raining? And you would have to secure the U Haul every time you left it and ideally you would want to leave a person at the U Haul.
$2500 is a bargain for all of that hassle. I'd let them hire the moving company and be done with it. Moving comes with A LOT of stress and usually on the heels of finishing up a job, graduation, and a dozen other things that are a big time suck.

Uhaul truck and have a beer and pizza party for friends to help you load the truck. The more hands the faster the loading will get done. With multiple people you should be able to have one person sitting the truck in front of her apt for a few minutes for the big stuff.

Rent a hand truck (utility dolly) along with a truck or van. They need at least three people for a job like this so one can stay with the truck and the other two should be able to handle getting everything out of the apartment. If they don't have friends they can rely on locally, I would head out for the weekend to help them.
I would not go to the expense of hiring a moving company for a job this small.

They could sell it all, move the minimum, and spend the 2500 plus what they get for selling it to just buy new that fits in the new place. I would not move slap-together stuff. Family heirlooms? Yes.

Sell it!
What they make, added to the moving money will get them some new things in Philly.

Check to see if U-haul has a list of "loaders". Also check Craigslist for small local movers that could do the job. just get the prices in writing and be sure the people know its on the 7th floor and limited parking. Sounds like no more than 4 hours.

you can rent loaders off of the haul page. also often times in NYC there are people hanging around the uhaul places that will help you move the furniture. when we moved out of NYC we hired some of the usual movers and they were great

Seven floors of schlepping? I really like this idea! They could probably nicely (re)furnish a studio apartment with IKEA and garage sale items for $2500 and alleviate a lot of moving stress for everyone in the process.

I would hire loaders as well. They don't need someone to actually move it (which is the big expense) just to help them schlep and load.

If they are under 25yo they may not be allowed to rent a Uhaul. I'd check on that first.

Your DD is almost a college graduate... I bet she and her BF have friends that they can get to help.... personally... I'd stay home and let them get on with being adults.

Ikea furniture, really any furniture made from particle board, is really unnecessarily heavy (it's very dense) and does not hold up well to being moved. I tried to move an Ikea chest of drawers (with a moving company) and all the joints got wiggly and the drawers never did close right again. Put all of the furniture on craigslist, make the buyers responsible for figuring out how to move it and then buy new stuff when they get to Philly.
