I've got the self-clean feature on my oven going right now, but the racks are out. Anyone have a suggestion of a good product to clean these?
I hate running the self-cleaning oven; it really makes the house stink.
Thanks!

One of the best ways I have found to clean the racks is to put them in a garbage bag and add a cup or so of ammonia, seal the bag and let sit over night. All the burnt on grease and food wipes right off. It's a smelly process, but it really works.

I have to have the oven cleaned before ds gets home from school with a classmate. They have a Spanish project to do, and they have to cook a Spanish dish, and have every step video'd and spoken in Spanish. Sooooo...I didn't want my oven looking like it need to be tossed out when they put the dish in the oven, lol. Why or why do I procastinate? I will remember your suggestion though. Thanks!

Use a piece of aluminum foil to wipe the racks with. That and a small amount of elbow grease, the grime will come off.

I find it at Lowes or Home Depot...there is a small bottle, but you get a better value if you but the big 1/2 gallon size I use the big one to refill the small one. That stuff cleans anything!!!

What Spanish dish are they making? You may have to share the recipe! My mil and husband make paella, that's what we have for Christmas dinner at their house. And if it makes you feel better, my teen daughters wouldn't even notice a messy oven! So maybe your son and his friend won't either?

Why did you take the racks out?

I recently cleaned my oven racks using a method I found online. Fill the bathtub with hot water and laundry detergent, then add the racks. I also added several dryer sheets between each of the racks. THen I left them overnight to soak. Next day I took the dryer sheets and wiped each of the racks. That removed nearly all of the gunk. After that I just washed them well and put them back in the oven. They look like new!
I'd never tried the dryer sheets before and was a bit skeptical. The parts I cleaned with those were the easiest and took no elbow grease. Interesting technique!

I'm marking my spot here. I need to clean our oven/racks before we move out and I'm dreading it. But these suggestions may make it that much less unpleasant.

Why did you take the racks out? The cleaning instructions for my oven say to take them out, but I'm not sure why. What Spanish dish are they making? You may have to share the recipe! My mil and husband make paella, that's what we have for Christmas dinner at their house. And if it makes you feel better, my teen daughters wouldn't even notice a messy oven! So maybe your son and his friend won't either? They didn't make anything that complicated--they made a very, very simple dish--strawberry flan. They had to have their dish/recipe cleared by the teacher, and I guess there were a lot of kids wanting to make complicated dishes. Problem is the videos need to be edited to no more than 5-6 minutes long. This was definitely a challenging project, lol. I don't think my kids would notice my dirty oven either, but it was pretty bad and I just didn't want it documented forever on YouTube, lol!!! I couldn't find Krud Kutter at grocery store, so I have it noted to look next time I'm at Lowe's, etc., so I went the aluminum foil route. Worked fine, but I think a deep clean is still in order. Thanks!

I have always just left my racks in. I didn't even know you weren't supposed to, until I had done it several times.
They were fine. They didn't slide quite as smooth - but I found this fix and it works perfect.
Afterwards, spray a shot of PAM onto a paper towel and rub it down the inside of the oven where the racks slide. Use the same piece of paper towel and run it down the side of the racks. Racks slide super smooth after that.
