Sponges used anywhere in the house just totally ick me out. So definitely a no-no in the kitchen. And no dishcloths, either.
I have a nylon scrubby thing I got from Amway years ago (like, more than 10). It goes in the dishwasher everytime I run it, but actually doesn't get used much these days with it only me in the kitchen, and no cooking.

Love the sponges that come with a non stick scratchy layer. They go in the dishwasher. That's what I use. Since I live where the air is very dry, I could leave a soaking wet sponge in the sink and it would be bone dry just a couple hours later, so it never gets moldy or mildewy. When we lived in NC, I could leave a wrung-out sponge for a day and it still wouldn't be dry. I have a sponge with no scratchy layer, but it's so soft and wimpy, it doesn't do a good job cleaning dishes. I use it more for the countertop.

I've never used a sponge. I don't like the texture. I use paper towels.

I do and sometimes a scrub daddy. I run the dishwasher every night and always put them in to clean them.

I don't use sponges because I don't like the feel of them -- I can't stand to squeeze them out. I use dish cloths and paper towels. I do have some scotch-brite scrubbies that I use when needed, but toss after using.

No sponges.
I use dish cloths. I do get the gross factor with them, because the one at my mom's house has always been nasty and smelly. Problem is she washed it when she remembered and it wasn't often.
I can go through 4 or 5 of them in a day. They never lay wet waiting to be used again. They get tossed before they get raggedy, too.

Yes, I use the Dobie sponges for getting stuff off dishes, and cleaning the sink, then it goes in the dishwasher each night. I never use them on counter tops or anything else. I've been using sponges forever, and I'm still alive. lol. Dishcloths just don't scrub dishes well.
