Anyone have any idea why someone's taste buds could possibly change - to a point where they are tasting excessive salt on things?
My FIL has had prior health problems, I'm not even sure what medications he is on..but the last 3 times we have been out to eat with him and MIL he has sent back food saying it was too salty. Others at the table have ordered same dish and didn't find it to be too salty. It's too much of a coincidence that only his food would be the one to be too salty.
Anyone have any idea if medications or a medical condition would do this to taste buds?

Just age will do that. It may be some meds will also, but purely age changing the amount of tastebuds and the depression of the sense of smell that enhances the non salty flavors for balance.
My dad has no health problems, is on no meds, but in the last year or so he often finds things too salty. He is mid 70s.
eta: Dad used to love eating out. But so often food he used to like tastes "off" to him and being overly salty is one complaint. He is liking home cooking more where the amount of salt is controlled.

Also, if you are not used to eating food that's very salty, then what tastes normal to you would taste very salty to someone else.

Hmm. Interesting. A coworker of mine thinks everything tastes too salty, except for food she herself prepares. I always wondered if it was medication she was taking. She's only 56-ish.

Does he normally eat lower salt food? If he does, then restaurant food (notoriously high in sodium) probably does taste salty.
My mom has been saying the same thing. She lives in an assisted living home, and their food is fairly low in sodium. After living there for a year, almost every restaurant's food tastes salty to her.

FIL and MIL eat out all the time and have been doing so for years. So that is not the reason for the change.
I suspect it could be medication they have him on...I believe he might have had some changes in what he was taking. Of course -thats just a guess, I have no expertise to back it up.

I think sometimes it is the restaurant. I like salty food and buy my chips etc based on which have the most salt. But... I will not go to Outback anymore. The last two times I was there everything was WAY TOO SALTY!

if you normally eat a low salt or no salt diet, most restaurant food is going to taste extremely salty. If he normally eats at home with home cooked meals, that's probably part of the problem. I don't think I eat all that much salt but when I ate on my ILs, I would have to drown the food in salt to get it to taste somewhat normal. Kinda the reverse issue.
