We recently inherited $5000 with the instructions to be "fun and frivolous" with it, so we're thinking of a family vacation. Me, DH, 16 yo DD, and 14 yo DD. We live near Seattle and have been on 2 Alaska cruises, and all over WA, OR, and CA. We like relaxing and seeing natural sites while on vacation.
It will be a summer vacation.
Where would you go?

Colorado/Utah in the summer. Zion's National Park, Arches etc and then over to Vail/Aspen.

How about Hawaii? There's so much to see there. How about the East coast to see the fall colors. Florida for Epcot and Harry Potter World. I'm glad you're going to follow the instructions and enjoy yourselves.

I would take a cruise for about 10 - 12 days and just relax.

Grand Canyon? Cabin in the mountains? Colorado has natural areas of all kinds
Personally? I'd take my kids to NY during the hockey season and we'd go watch a Devils game and then go to Canada and the Hockey Hall of Fame. Or we'd go to the beach in the winter Hawaii?

Would you leave the US?
For me that'd be a trip to The Maldives...or maybe Fiji or Bora Bora. Proper Robinson Crusoe stuff.

We are huge baseball fans so we would probably head to whatever big city was hosting our team (go Jays go!) and make a spectacular holiday out of it. Otherwise, Florida and Universal Studios for Harry Potter world.

I would use Google Flights and the explore destinations option to find a great deal on airfare outside of the U.S. and let that be my guide.

Would you be able to add to the $5000? Like whatever you would normally spend on a holiday?

I think it depends on how long you have to vacation.
If I had a 2-3 weeks I'd do a cross country drive in a rental and see as much of the country as I could, then fly back, or vice versa.
If only a week that limits what you can do.

We did a 3 week road trip to the Grand Circle last summer (Arches, Zion, Bryce, Grand Canyon, etc.) and I think it was the best vacation I've ever taken so that would be my vote for someone who hasn't done that trip yet!
Otherwise, our next big trip will probably be London. Not sure how far $5000 would go toward paying for that but it's a start at least!

Northern Michigan is lovely in the summer. The area around Traverse City, Sleeping Bear Dunes, etc. remains one of our favorite vacations ever.

Not much for a family of 4. I would do a western driving tour. Pick an area and see and do things. If you pick north, for example, go through Idaho to Wyoming and see Yellowstone and Grand Tetons, Glacier in Montana and other places.
Eta. Is there a time limit to use it? I might wait and see if an interesting opportunity presents itself. Or get something like a pool table.

I'd spend a week on Captiva Island. My mom asked me what I wanted to for my birthday this year-it's a big one, my 50th. We always go to the beach for the week of my birthday, but a bit further north than Captiva so when I said I wanted to go to the beach we both laughed and said maybe we should try a new beach for a change. And we both said maybe we would head over to Sanibel. For $5k we could stay for a month or two. So, if I had an extra $5k for a vacation, I would head to the beach and rent a house for a month or two.

4 people with $5000 wont go very far unless you go to canada.... If you are limited to just that $5000 you might want to start pricing out airfare to different international places before you get your hopes up about going out of the country. DH and I paid $3000 for airfare to Paris for just the two of us. It's crazy expensive. A lot of good suggestions so far, but a lot of them outside the continental US just can't be done with 4 people and $5000.

It was fabulous!!! But, airfare alone for two people was $3000.
Another favorite trip that our family has done with teenagers has been Estes Park, CO. We rented a big cabin through VRBO with SIL, BIL and their three teens and spent a week exploring Rocky Mountain National Park, whitewater rafting, ATVing, fly fishing, hiking. It was perfect for outdoor loving teens.
