I always have a good deal of medical bills from my kids. Last year during the free choice/health care time, I was in the middle of a big project and so busy at work. We have 2 weeks to choose but I *thought* it said if you do nothing everything will stay the same. I was going to look, but when I finally did, it was a day late and too late. I looked over everything quickly and it looked to be the same, so I thought fine. But it didn't keep my health savings account out. It put me back to zero. Our max is $2500, which I take annually, and I usually have closer to $5K in medical costs, so that pre-tax $2.5K saves me a lot of money. I am just sick and I just want to cry. I'm so TIRED of doing everything and being responsible for everything and I feel so stupid I let this slip through the cracks so I didn't let my work slip through the cracks. Pity party over. Sigh.

That really stinks. I'm sorry. I've done things like this before and I always beat myself up for it. Be gentle with yourself...it's hard when you're the responsible adult who has to take care of everything.

We have all done things like this. I really feel for you. So sorry. But we can't do everything and be perfect. None of us.

If it helps, it saves you only about 25 percent. That's the way it was explained to me. Think of it as a 25 percent discount on allowed medical. I would be upset too, but it really is not 2500 you save. It's more like 600.

Thanks for your thoughts. I know it's like $600. That's a lot of money for me. This is just making me sick. Worse, it's money I thought I put away, too!

I know 600 hurts and I am sure it would be handy. But it's not 2500. And if their bills are high enough and if you itemize, you can still get a deduction at tax time. Just trying to help you feel a little better. Sometimes the big picture helps us feel less terrible. Save 600 someplace else if you can and you at least come out even.

I did the same thing. We switch the kids to my better insurance and I somehow missed the seperate form for fsa
Oh well, time to look forward and not beat yourself up over it. ( too much ) because you can do anything about it now.

Where does the missing pretax 2,500 dollars fit in? 600 dollars is definitely a lot of money for sure. I would be kicking myself too if I cost us 600 more then I normally spend on something. You definitely have my sympathy there.

Don't be too hard on yourself. That's something sometimes you can't help when it comes to the medical stuff. It's hard to balance. I always tell me self it could be a lot more. It's tough one to swallow.

Are you talking about an FSA or an HSA? The flex spending (FSA) is use it or lose it and has to be re elected every year. The limit for 2016 is $2,550. HSA's can be built up over time and the money doesn't disappear at the end of the year. We allow our employees to change their contribution amounts on their HSA during the year. The IRS allows it, our Section 125 plan allows for it so we let folks do it. Can you maybe check with HR to see if you have the HSA if you can change the contribution amount during the year? I realize not all employers allow for this. Out of 300 folks enrolled in our high ded plan we only have 30 who take the HSA so we figured it wouldn't be a lot of work to allow it.

We have 2 weeks to choose but I *thought* it said if you do nothing everything will stay the same My dad has a friend that lost his diebetes benefits because of it. I do know that when we do ours, it states that if we don't want to do anything, we don't have to, BUT the FSA is a separate form that you must redo yearly. Is this for the 2016 calendar year? I am sorry and it sucks. Is it possible to open up a savings account that you can put stuff in there each pay period?

I am sorry that this happened. But all of us had made stupid mistakes and it has cost us money. That $600 would be a lot to us too. I agree, it is so hard to have to be responsible for everything. I find that our family makes stupid, costly mistakes because we are so unorganized (my family is packrats, so that makes it so hard to find things - my husband is a paper/bill packrat, never throws them away even years later).

I hate when I make a mistake like that, but at some point in time, it seems to happen to us all. The bright side is, after this? I bet you never forget it again.

It stinks, but hey - you are human. Let it go. You wouldn't let a friend beat herself up over a mistake, so forgive yourself.

Don't be too hard on yourself. Things happen. You are a great mom and do plenty. Shit happens. You'll get it next time.

If it's a Health Savings Account vs. an FSA, you may be ok. Check it out with HR. You'd be able to change your contribution anytime throughout the year with my employer. If not, so sorry. That would be a tremendous loss.

That stinks. I'd be upset too if we missed signing up for our fsa. Matter of fact we will have used ours all up by next week cause I had to have a crown in January. Other great things about it besides the tax savings is having it available long before you've contributed all the money

Thanks for all these nice thoughts. It is an FSA - use it or lose it. I always use it. I've already spent $2500 this year for my kids. I'll talk to my company on Monday. It's possible that since it's outside the actual insurance part, they may allow me to start putting money aside. That doesn't help for the $2500 I've already spent, but I know I'll spend almost that much more, so maybe! Thanks for making me feel better
