I've always printed 4x6's at Costco, Shutterfly, Walgreens, etc - whoever had a good deal at the time. I really love some of the custom sizes with white borders, the photobooth prints, Instagram 4x4's, etc that I'm seeing around a lot. I have a Mac with iPhoto that I don't really use to edit (lack of time really), but I would like to print some different sizes and maybe do a bit of editing from time to time. So, questions for those of you who do this:
1. What program(s) do you use? 2. Do you home print or send out? 3. If you home print, what printer do you use?

i use picmonkey.com to edit. I dont do any advanced editing, just color correcting cropping and resizing so that website works great for me. I have the same question about printing different sizes! I know there has to be an easier way, right now Ive been opening the picture in a Word document and adjusting the size there (you just grab the corner and drag smaller or larger). The problem with this is I dont know the exact size! This layout drove me crazy, I couldnt print 4x6s bc I would have had to crop out a lot of the picture so I shrunk all of these down in Word. I wish the 3 on the right page all met in the corners but whatever, I was over it lol! Looking forward to the replies

I do all my printing at home now because I find it much more convenient. I dont think it's cheaper but that doesn't bother me.
I have iphoto and PSE. I don't do a lot of editing - just maybe enhance the colours or crop a bit.
I mostly print a mix of 4x6, 3x4 and 4x4 for Project Life. I do some larger sizes as well -5x7 or 6x8 for regular layouts.
It's really easy to print custom sizes from iphoto - when you select print you get some standard sizes in the right hand panel or you can just add your own. I usually do my smaller pics on 4x6 paper and then cut them up. If you have Photoshop Elements there are a lot of free templates out there eg for 2 3x4s on a 4x6.
I have a Canon Pixma mg5250. It's not a current model but there will be something similar out there.
HTH!

I've looked into picmonkey before but I don't think they have a Mac version, sadly. I'll have to try just using iphoto to print some different sizes and see how that goes. Is PSE expensive?

US$99.99 for the full version of PSE12. I do basic editing in iphoto too but now they've announced iphoto & Aperture are being discontinued and I'm not sure what the replacement 'Photos' is going to be like. I've certainly got a lot of use out of PSE. ETA you can use Picmonkey with Safari: www.picmonkey.com/help/articles/1065428-what-are-picmonkeys-system-and-browser-requirements

Oh sweet! I'll have to check picmonkey out, at least to see if it fits my basic needs. Thank you anniefb!

If you want to try PSE they have a free trial you can download at Adobe.com. That way you can play around with it for a month and see how you like it.

I do simple editing (cropping, enhancing contrast, etc, in Picasa (a free program). When I'm ready to print, I open Windows Explorer and highlight the filename in the directory but do not open the file. Next, I click the Print button at the top and am given various options. I select the paper size (usually, 3 x 5 index card or 4 x 6), and I un-click "Fit picture to frame." Then, I click on the link "Options" at the bottom right and click on the link "Printer Properties" on the next page. That screen gives me a choice of Actual Size or "% of Normal Size." I often select 80% to 90%, depending on my needs. Hit OK and, on the next page, Print.
I generally use 4 x 6 photo paper and cut the resulting print. (Often, with smaller photos, I can use large scraps, so I get two prints from one piece of photo paper. If I do this, I use my tape runner to glue the photo paper to a larger piece of scrap paper and determine the correct position by trial and error.)
I have an HP Deskjet 3747 printer.

If I want different size photos, I make a collage in Powerpoint and print on 8.5x11 paper then cut them. I like varying sizes in my mini albums. I print mostly at home on Epson WF7620. Might be more to print at home but I like it better.

I use Picasa to create collages on 4x6 prints for my smaller than 4x6 photos.

Cool, I never thought about Picasa. I'll try that too, and maybe try PSE's free trial. Thanks for all the tips!

I use the print module in Lightroom to put multiple sizes on an 8x10 canvas or upload all pics and print various sizes at Persnickety Prints. Their quality is top notch and they print 3x4s that fit Becky Higgins project life pages. They have a great selection of sizes and offer white borders on some sizes plus a variety of cool options like Instagram or Polaroid shaped photos. They have a great blog and run specials from time to time.

I use PSE for basic editing. All I really do to my photos is crop and then add RadLab filters. I love RadLab so much. It was the best $99 I have ever spent. I also print at home with an Epson Charm, or if I need larger photos, I have a Epson Artisan 1430 wide format printer.

I am a pc user, I edit on my laptop as well as my iPhone and print from a few places.
1. What program(s) do you use? On my laptop I use Photoshop Elements in conjunction with Totally RadLab (it goes on sale a few times a year, def around black friday/cyber monday) I still am trying to learn Lightroom
On IPhone i use PicTapGo which is made by Totally RadLab, and I also sometimes use the Photoshop Express app, as well as Instagram, A Beautiful Mess and Rhonna Farrer apps to edit. 2. Do you home print or send out? All of the above. If I don't care much about quality and just want quick prints, I will send to Shutterfly or Snapfish during their free deals. I don't really like the quality tho, so if I want quality 4x6 I will send to Mpix. For 4x4s I love using Social Print Studio and I can send to them directly from their app from my Iphone. I also have used Persnickety Prints for all size prints, including 4x4 and was pleased.
3. If you home print, what printer do you use? I have a Canon Pixma (forget the exact model, its about 4 years old) but it has the 4 different ink tanks. I use the Canon Plus Glossy II photo paper.
Also I've see sales on PSE as low as $60, or u could even buy an older version. The newer versions don't do that much more, its just about updates and all that. It's easy to use as well.

I use Picasa to edit, Photosheet for fitting more than one picture on a 4 by 6 (I like the 3.5 inch square size), and have everything printed at Costco (they have a 5 by 5 size now which is nice). I would use Walgreens (they are closer to me) but order a 5 by 7 is .39 cents at Costco, Walgreens charges $1.20 or something ridiculous.
I could print at home but the quality is better having someone else do the printing.
