So here's my first world fluff vent. DH and I went to a school fundraiser and one of the fundraising mechanisms was something new to me called a dessert dash. The idea is that instead of including the dessert with your ticket price, there is a buffet table filled with delectable desserts of all kinds that have been donated by local bakeries, etc. The people sitting at your table pool their bids, and the table with the highest total bid gets first dibs on the full sized cakes, plates of cupcakes, donuts, etc. Second highest goes next, and so on until all tables that have placed bids got to pick something. DH and I were sitting at a table with two couples from our neighborhood that we're friends with, and two couples we didn't know at all. Prior to those people sitting down, the six of us talked about the options and I said to our friends, "Ugh, please pick ANYTHING BUT the carrot cake!" There had to have been 15 chocolate concoctions that looked divine, plus cupcakes, donuts, and more. And ONE carrot cake. Normally, I am the kind of person who would volunteer to be in the "dasher" and I would be willing to elbow my way through the crowd to get something amazing for the table, but since I'm still rocking the glam orthotic boot for another couple months and can't walk much less run, that wasn't an option. So one of the two women I didn't know quickly volunteered, there was a bit of discussion, everyone wrote down their bids and turned in our sheet. Our table's bid ended up in the middle of the pack with a number of other tables that all bid the same total amount (PSA, if you're ever in this situation, have everyone bid ONE DOLLAR more than you normally would, and it will bump your group just higher than the tables that all bid the even dollar amount, i.e. $21 instead of $20), so our table's runner went head to head through the crowd with about five others, and came back with--you guessed it--THE FREAKING CARROT CAKE. We paid $20 for dessert so DH could eat one piece because I wasn't touching it. I don't even like the cream cheese frosting. I was SO completely disappointed, after looking at that table of delicious looking desserts all night long and then being denied even one bite. I know, I know, first world problem definitely, but still. In hindsight, I should have taken my piece and shopped it around to other tables to see if I could get anyone to trade for something edible, but I was so disgusted at the time that the thought didn't even occur to me until today! You live and learn.

That's what makes the world go round. I look at chocolate concoctions and go....BLAH! Give me a carrot cake on any menu and that is what I'm ordering. I love carrot cake.
Plus....I have a "romantic" story attached to the CC that makes it even more of a favorite!
I'm sorry you were disappointed though!!

I totally agree, as long as you're not bringing the dessert to my table LOL! I'll trade you my carrot cake for your chocolate any day of the week.

I can't think of a variety of cake I wouldn't eat, but I think carrot cake may be my favorite. Love, love, love it.

I love carrot cake ~ especially the cream cheese icing. When I worked in the Trust Dept of a bank in Baton Rouge (31 years ago) my carrot cakes were so popular I baked one for everyone's birthday. Generally at least 1-2 a month. The secret to a very moist cake is to use Gerber baby food carrots rather than grated carrots. (I never added raisins but lots of chopped pecans) Yummy! But I'm sorry you were disappointed.

My "romantic" story isn't really romantic now that I think it through! I was trying to impress my husband. We were dating and I WANTED to impress him . I baked a CC for him. My mom said our oven was acting up so check the cake with a tooth pick. Well, I checked the outer rim and it was perfect. Took it out to cool and when I put my hand on it to flip it out all the liquid batter pooled out. I about died! (Instead of dying I cleaned the batter back up, packed it in and started baking again. In the end I made an amazing cake....it just took me a while to get there. We still laugh every time I bake one) FYI....if it has raisins I'm not as happy!

I will validate your disappointment, I'd be furious! Dessert is always my favourite part of dinner, and I would be extremely unhappy to end up with carrot cake. I can eat it, but I don't particularly like cream cheese, so I would never choose it. I'm not a huge chocolate cake fan either - it often looks a lot better than it tastes. Give me something fruity - lemon meringue pie or key lime pie, or strawberry shortcake, and I'll be extremely happy.

I don't know if I can say carrot cake is my very favorite, but it's up there. However, having a child who absolutely hates chocolate, I can understand your disappointment.
The more I think about it the less I like this game. It's difficult to ensure everyone at the table will want the same thing. I can think of a bunch of desserts I wouldn't be thrilled with.

I would have happily traded for a slice of that one too. Yum.

I just thought it was amusing? annoying? that she brought back literally the ONLY thing on that table that I wouldn't like, and the table mates kind of discussed it first! And that I basically paid $10 for an empty plate. So sad. I love me a good dessert and will pretty much eat anything. Chocolate? Yes, please! Caramel? C'mon over. Fruity? Of course! Even nuts and coconut are totally okay. My silver lining here is that it was a fundraiser for my kid's school and all the money raised goes directly to classroom grants that benefit the kids and I can get behind that.

carrot cake is not dessert, and I would have been pissed too. I would have pegged you as a carrot cake lover likescarrots ETA: I hate raw and cooked carrots! I literally gag! I have tried and tried to reintroduce them and gave up. BUT I can handle them okay if they are mixed into things. I rarely notice them in carrot cake. Chocolate is my favorite, but at a dinner like that I'd choose carrot because no one in my family likes it and it is a PITA to make and I LOVE cream cheese frosting. I also like raisins and nuts.

I love this idea for a fundraiser!
I like carrot cake just fine, but it doesn't sound as decadent as some of the other options and I would have wanted to try something new. I'd have been so disappointed if I was excitedly anticipating dessert and the one thing I didn't want showed up on the table. Dessert is just something that shouldn't be messed with.

But I'm sorry you were disappointed. This reminds me of DH's sister. For the longest time when her two kids were little she would ALWAYS make a carrot cake for EVERY birthday. We would get invited and because the kids were little we'd go. It wasn't good, even DH said it wasn't good and he generally likes carrot cake. She would give the kids a piece and they would summarily scrape off and eat all the frosting leaving a nasty clump of orangey-brown mushed up goo on their plates. Seriously, who gives a three year old carrot cake for their birthday? One year I just couldn't take it anymore and I brought her kids these HUGE sugary frosted cookies for the party just because I'm a rebel like that. I'm pretty sure I haven't seen those kids happier before or since. Now that her kids are older, we don't get invited to their parties anymore. Shucks!

I like carrot cake - a lot, but I agree it was really shitty of them to bring back carrot cake after you asked them not to.

For Easter I ordered a chocolate cake and a carrot cake from a very good bakery. My husband gave me side eye when I told him what he was picking up and told me that nobody likes carrot cake.
Surprise! We had no leftover carrot cake, but we did have some chocolate.

bc2ca It was an interesting thing for a fundraiser that I hadn't ever heard of or seen done before. I'm sure they made a lot of money from it judging from what some of the live auction items went for and by how many tables went before us (our table bid $100, $20 per couple, and there had to have been at least 20 tables). There were a lot of really fabulous looking desserts of all kinds to choose from.

I do want to add, I really don't like the dessert idea at the fundraiser. Why should everyone have to eat the same thing? I would have been thrilled to be the first table to get to take samples from *different* desserts.

I actually don't eat desserts of any kind anymore (gastric bypass) but when I did I would eat carrot cake but it would definitely not be my first choice ... The lady at your table let you down

Your table's bid wins and everyone from your table gets to go up and pick what they want from everything. In the event of a tie like we had, it could go by table number order since the people with the low table numbers are stuck way up by the front... I just KNEW someone on here would come up with a better way to do it!

Our school does the dessert dash fundraiser too.
I don't like carrot cake, love carrots and zucchini bread though, so it's not a veggie thing. It's dh's very favorite dessert though. He would have been thrilled.

I would stop off at the grocery store and get something I liked on the way home. I seriously felt like doing just that but it was midnight when it ended and I knew DH would pitch a fit over me "making it into a bigger deal than it is," ugh. Is it so wrong to want a donut or a cupcake after looking at them all night? He went off to do some chores today and isn't home, and I can't drive for another week otherwise I would have gone to the store myself. Does anyone know if Amazon's Prime Now delivers dessert? I suppose I could just MAKE something...
