It looks like crap because tonight, my husband pulled up our 20 plus year old carpet and padding because yesterday, we ordered new wood flooring! I am soooo excited!! Our carpet has been in dire need of being ripped out for a LONG time. Let's just say, the early 90s hunter green carpet that we loved when we built our house wore out it's welcome LONG ago.
Right now, we have (had!) hunter green carpet in our living and dining rooms, ceramic tile in the kitchen, parquet in the entry hallway, and wood in the family room. Yesterday, we ordered new wood for the entire first floor. I know it's going to be months of a disaster in my house by the time my husband takes up the tile and other wood and replaces it all, but I can't wait! I'll live with the disaster that my house will be.
I may be singing a different song when I am sick of my house being a mess, but for now...I love it.
And I just have to say...carpet is sooooo gross!!! I am a pretty good housekeeper, I have a really good vacuum, and I truly wanted to throw up and sneeze my brains out as my husband pulled all that old crap out. YUCK. I never want to have carpet ever again.

Oooh, sounds exciting! I'll be watching your progress, since this is a project that we want & need to do as well. We've got W2W carpet in living room and dining room and up the stairs to the upper level landing, but it really needs to come out! I've been ready to ditch it for about the last 5 years but we haven't had the time/money/inspiration to "just do it". Our carpet isn't even as old as yours - it's only 15 years old but it's pale/med blue and dingy, shows dirt & stains like crazy, and I'm just over it. I also have a great vacuum cleaner and keep the carpet vacuumed (we don't even have pets), but that doesn't help with the dinginess. There is hardwood (oak) flooring underneath and we'll have to get it refinished as soon as the carpet comes up. Not only that, DH is like "well, as long as the carpet is going to be coming up let's go ahead and repaint before we refinish the floors"...and so suddenly the project went from do-able to daunting. But, like you, I can't wait to have wood floors instead of carpet. Good luck, and I hope you love it!

Yep, one thing leads to another, doesn't it? We have been discussing paint tonight, because if we're going to put in new floors, now is the time to paint, right? And unfortunately, I have to paint ceilings, too.

Good for you! We just moved here a year ago and I don't miss the carpet in my last house. I much prefer the wood floors. I have tile in my kitchen and bathroom, but wood floors on the whole rest of the floor. I am toying with the idea of ripping up the carpet in our basement bedroom and putting wood floors down there too. I wouldn't even mind a laminate floor in my basement. But no carpet.

And unfortunately, I have to paint ceilings, too. So true. When we bought our house, we almost six weeks to move in. We started with paint, but then we realized that it would be silly not to refinish the hardwood floors so we did that too. And installed some tile in another room. And put a wood floor in our dining room too. It was a lot of work. Luckily we had an empty house.

And the ball has dropped and is starting to get rolling like a snowball gathering more snow as it continues to get bigger.
Good luck to all of you on this journey of renovations.

LOL I know that it will be like "when you give a mouse a cookie" kind of thing. We have SO much we need to do to our house, and I am secretly hoping that this will be the catalyst for getting my dh to do things I have wanted to do for years. LOL I have already warned him about that. Our kitchen cabinets need to be refinished (they are good cabinets, just old), we need new countertops, etc.
My brain is reeling with all I want to/hope we can do.

How exciting! You'll have to show us the before and after photos when the new timber floors are done. Personally I love carpet. We put in new carpet about 3 years ago in the lounge room, all the bedrooms and the hallways. The kitchen and is tiled and the family room leading off the kitchen has the original pine floor boards which have definitely seen better days. Soon we will be putting in a new kitchen along with new timber floorboards in the kitchen right through to the family room. I can't wait. (But I still love my carpet! )

I like it...but tearing it up and seeing all the dirt and dust underneath...I kept thinking, "No wonder I have allergies!" LOL From all that I swept up, you would think I haven't vacuumed in years.

MIL passed away in February and we've been working on her house to get it ready to sell. Last month, DS and I pulled up all the carpets and padding throughout the house to expose the hardwood floors. The filth that came out of the carpets was astounding. MIL and FIL were not good housekeepers, to put it politely. But there was decades of dirt/dust/dander/pet fur in them that killed me due to my allergies. Today we loaded the carpets into the dumpster we rented for the renovation debris and things we purged, and I was assaulted by the filthy carpets for the last time! I took a very long shower when I got home today. I love hardwood too and have them on the main level and carpet upstairs in the bedrooms. I'd love to get rid of it at some point. I hope you enjoy yours, and when the reno mess starts to drive you insane, keep thinking about how good it's all going to look when it's done!

I remember using hunter green and camel as my color theme in this house in the late 70s! I didn't realize it made a comeback in the 90s too. I am so envious that you are getting your whole house done! I would love to be able to do my upstairs. I cannot tell you how much I hate carpeting. Hate it! I own a carpet steamer thing, and one of those little green machine spot cleaners, and I spot clean whenever I see something and do a full steam clean at least once a year, but it still feels dirty and dusty to me. I can imagine what you found under yours, because that is what I picture under mine too.
When I was a child, we had wood floors in every room except the bathroom, the single bathroom, in our 3-bedroom house. My mom was soooo very happy when Dad let her get actual wall-to-wall carpeting. It was like this luxury thing that upped your status in the neighborhood. All the moms came over to see it and oooh and ahhh over it. And every bedroom was a different color of carpeting. I can remember being really sad to have my bedroom wood floor covered up. I shared a tiny bedroom with my younger sister and I kept my side of the floor spotless and polished. I though the wood was just so pretty and I polished my tiny slivers of flooring up until it was glossy and shiny. The thing is, I used Dad's shoe polish to do the floor in small patches by hand. I was caught when Mom went to do Dad's shoes and the wax was almost gone Oops. I didn't know all wax was not the same. The bedroom was tiny and my sister and I had a twin bed each, a desk each at the foot of our beds, and one nightstand between our beds. Her bed had to go in front of the closet because the room wasn't big enough to leave access to it. We had to stand on her bed, open the plastic accordion door to get our clothes. When the carpet men removed all the furniture, my side had these weird shaped shiny bits. I would love to see it all these years later when the new owners pull up the "old carpeting" to unearth the gorgeous old wood floors. If my sections are still shiny, they will wonder what the heck that room was used for.
Then by the time we moved into our next house, there was the traditional different color in every bedroom. My sister had deep red carpeting, mine was a turquoise blue, my parent's room was lavender, and the hallway, stairs, and living room was this blue and green weird looking stuff. But by then, the new thing was to have the same color throughout the whole house. What? I can't choose my own room? That sucked.
We carpeted in the house I am in now, because my ex insisted. I so wanted wood flooring like when I was little and I was laughed at. Everybody had carpet. Wood was considered too old fashioned. One of the first things I did when my ex moved out was to get wood flooring, well actually laminate because of the pool, put in downstairs. I was cautioned against using real wood because our downstairs bathroom is in the center of the downstairs and the kids would have to drip through the family room to reach the bathroom and it would ruin the wood over time. At least it looked like wood to me, so I was happy.
Now I am planning my next move, and I swear, one of the first things I will be hoping for is original wood flooring. If the house is too new to have wood, I'm going to have it put in before I spend one night in it. I love wood so much! Wow, that was a walk down memory lane.
Congratulations, and please show us before and after pictures! I would love to see the change.

How exciting! I live for the day when I can rip up the family room and formal living room (a/k/a toy room) carpet. It wasn't bad when we moved in, but we've been here for almost four years and life with a kid and three dogs isn't kind to carpet! We have other priorities in our immediate future so it's not even a project on the horizon at this point, but carpet is so gross. Even though the process probably isn't all that enjoyable, the end result sure will be!

I will share before and after pics! It may be a while since my husband is doing the work. It's great that he can...saves us money, but at the same time, I wish I could pay someone to just come and do it in a day.

We just did the exact thing to our house over the last few weeks. My husband pulled up the carpet in our great/living room and pulled up old laminate flooring in the foyer and dining room of our house. He put down a floating floor. It took him a couple of weeks, but he's pretty much done. He just needs to add some quarter-round and transition pieces. It looks amazing! Ripping up the carpet was very eye-opening and we considered doing all the rooms. But our house is an open floor plan and it just wouldn't be good for acoustics and warmth to have the entire house with only wood-flooring. Plus we're planning to sell it soon and the realtor swayed us to keep carpets in the bedrooms. It was a long process and pretty hard on hubby (I helped whenever I could), but it was well worth it!
Good luck on your renovation!!!

So much fun! When I sold my first house in 1999 it was super eye opening. I decided it was absolutely the definition of insanity to fix up a house so it was good enough for other people. Forget that! I have never looked back. I didn't have a ton of money, but I would be damned if I was going to be replacing curtains or buying a new welcome mat for someone else's enjoyment again. I also did a lot of the work myself, including tearing out an ugly sink and mirror in the powder room and replacing it. I also did flooring, a new vanity, even took a toilet out! I find that rather than making a list and bugging dh about it, I make a list and get to work, and he will almost always join in on the fun (except painting, he HATES to paint. When we sold and had to paint it neutral colors, he hired someone since I didn't have the time).
The little things can really add up to big change!
